Eloy Room delivered a goalkeeping masterclass as Curaçao secured a historic 0-0 draw against Ecuador at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, earning the island nation its first-ever FIFA World Cup point.
The Curaçao goalie produced one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in World Cup history, making 15 saves to frustrate Ecuador throughout the match. His tally is the most recorded in a men’s World Cup game without extra time since records began in 1966. It also matches the 15 saves made by United States goalkeeper Tim Howard against Belgium in 2014, although that match went to extra time.
Ecuador started aggressively and should have taken the lead inside three minutes. Enner Valencia raced through on goal, but Room reacted brilliantly to push the striker’s effort around the post and keep the scores level.
The pressure continued in the 13th minute when John Yeboah burst into the penalty area after a long pass forward. However, Eloy Room stood firm again and comfortably denied the Ecuador winger.
Gonzalo Plata tried his luck from distance midway through the first half, striking a half-volley from around 20 yards. Yet once again, Room was perfectly positioned to gather the effort.
Ecuador came even closer three minutes before halftime. Yeboah created space for a left-footed strike inside the area, but Eloy Room got down quickly and parried the shot away.
The South Americans dominated the opening 45 minutes and set new national World Cup records for shots on target in a first half with six, while also completing 340 successful passes before the break.
Eloy Room resumed his heroics after halftime. In the 50th minute, Moises Caicedo unleashed a powerful drive from 25 yards, but the Curaçao goalkeeper handled it comfortably.
Curaçao then enjoyed their best attacking spell of the game just after the hour mark. Leandro Bacuna forced a save before his brother Juninho recycled possession into the box. Liviana Comenencia followed up with an effort of his own, but Ecuador managed to survive the pressure.
Moments before the hydration break, Room produced a remarkable sequence of saves. He first denied Valencia from close range and then made two more excellent stops from the resulting corner to preserve the clean sheet.

The Ecuador attacks kept coming. Nilson Angulo tested Room from distance in the 73rd minute, but the goalkeeper collected comfortably.
Five minutes later, Valencia met another dangerous cross, only to see his header brilliantly saved by the inspired Curaçao captain.
Pedro Vite tried from long range in the 80th minute, but Eloy Room was equal to the challenge once more as he continued to frustrate Ecuador’s attackers.
Ecuador almost found a dramatic winner in the 90th minute. Angelo Preciado’s cross drifted toward goal and bounced off the crossbar, leaving Room relieved as the ball stayed out.
The South Americans had one final appeal in stoppage time when Valencia went down inside the penalty area under a challenge. However, the referee waved play on and saw no foul.
When the final whistle sounded, emotional scenes followed. Curaçao’s players celebrated wildly after securing the first World Cup point in the nation’s history. For a country that became the smallest nation ever to appear at a World Cup finals in terms of population and land mass, the result represented a remarkable achievement.
The draw also confirmed Germany as winners of Group E. Ecuador will face Germany in their final group match, while Curaçao take on Ivory Coast with hopes of building on their historic result.
The performance was an extraordinary response from Curaçao after their difficult tournament debut. In their opening game, they suffered a 7-1 defeat against four-time champions Germany, the heaviest loss by a World Cup debutant since 1954 and the joint-second heaviest debut defeat in tournament history.
This time, however, Curaçao showed resilience, determination and defensive discipline, with Eloy Room leading the way. His unforgettable display ensured a famous result that will be remembered as one of the great underdog stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
