Nigeria’s Super Falcons opened their quest for a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games with a 2–0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their African qualifying tie at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Trybal News reports.
After a frustrating first half in which the ten-time African champions struggled to convert their dominance into goals, Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu struck after the break to secure a valuable advantage for Nigeria.
The breakthrough arrived in the 48th minute when Alozie fired Nigeria ahead following an assist from Gift Monday, giving the hosts the momentum they had been seeking.
The Houston Dash defender continued to threaten going forward and came close to doubling Nigeria’s advantage eight minutes later, but the Comoros goalkeeper denied her from close range.
Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 60th minute when Kanu rose to head home a corner kick delivered by Jennifer Echegini, putting the Super Falcons firmly in control of the encounter.
Despite creating further opportunities, the Super Falcons were unable to add to their tally, leaving room for improvement ahead of the return fixture.
The victory marked a positive start for interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen, who is overseeing the women’s national team as the Nigeria Football Federation continues its search for a substantive head coach.
Comoros had entered the tie in impressive scoring form after recording a remarkable 30–0 aggregate victory over Sudan in the opening round. However, the island nation found Nigeria’s defence a considerably tougher challenge.
The two teams will meet again at the Remo Stars Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, with Nigeria looking to complete the job and progress to the next stage of the Olympic qualifiers.
Nigeria will take encouragement from the two-goal advantage but will also recognise the need for greater efficiency in front of goal as the qualifying campaign continues.
