Sadiq Umar was on target as Valencia CF secured a 2-1 victory over Girona FC in La Liga encounter at the Mestalla.
The result provided a significant boost for Valencia in their efforts to move clear of the relegation zone, with both teams entering the match needing points.
Head coach Carlos Corberán kept faith with Sadiq following his recent performances, and the Nigerian forward delivered with a lively display in attack.
Valencia controlled much of the first half and created the better chances. Sadiq had an early sight of goal in the 19th minute, but his attempt from inside the box went off target. Despite their dominance, the hosts were unable to break the deadlock before halftime.
The breakthrough arrived shortly after the restart when Largie Ramazani finished a well-worked move involving Javi Guerra, placing a low shot beyond Paulo Gazzaniga.
Sadiq doubled Valencia’s advantage in the 59th minute, connecting with a cross from José Gayà to head home his third league goal of the season. His movement in the box and physical presence allowed him to outmaneuver his marker and guide the ball into the net.
Girona responded quickly through Joel Roca in the 63rd minute, ensuring a tense finish. Sadiq was later substituted in the 71st minute for Hugo Duro as Valencia looked to protect their lead.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, Valencia held on to claim all three points. The win moves them further away from immediate danger and provides a timely boost as the season enters its closing stages.
