Ime Okon marked a significant moment in his international career, scoring his first goal for South Africa as Bafana Bafana began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2–1 victory over Guinea at Orlando Stadium, Trybal News reports.
The 22-year-old Hannover 96 defender, who was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and South African mother, gave South Africa the lead in the 30th minute.
Okon initially saw his header rebound off teammate Yaya Sithole before reacting quickly to fire the loose ball into the net and register his first international goal.
The goal adds another chapter to Okon’s international journey. With Nigerian heritage through his father, the defender was also eligible to represent Nigeria before establishing his international future with South Africa. Okon has previously explained that his decision was influenced by his connection to South Africa, describing the country as his home.
His contribution came on an important night for Bafana Bafana as Pitso Mosimane began his third spell as head coach with a victory.

Guinea responded after the break, with Seydouba Cisse equalising after Serhou Guirassy’s free-kick struck the South African defensive wall. South Africa, however, regained the lead in the 77th minute.
Substitute Yanela Mbuthuma released Norway-based defender Samukele Kabini behind the Guinea defence, and Kabini kept his composure to beat goalkeeper Soumaila Sylla and score the winning goal.
The result gives South Africa three points from the opening round of Group D, while Kenya and Eritrea each have one point following their 1–1 draw. Guinea remain without a point.
With qualification places limited in a group that includes co-host Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, the opening victory could prove valuable for South Africa’s campaign.
Bafana Bafana will face Eritrea at a neutral venue in Cairo on Wednesday, September 30, while Guinea will host Kenya the following day.
