Nigerian youth international Qurib Adetola has secured a move to Finnish champions HJK Helsinki after completing a transfer from Derby Football Academy. The 18-year-old midfielder signed a deal until the end of the 2027 season, with the club holding an option to extend his stay by a further year, Trybal News reports.
The transfer marks Adetola’s first move outside Nigeria after progressing through the ranks at Derby Football Academy, where he developed into one of the club’s most promising young players. HJK also confirmed that Derby Football Academy will receive a transfer fee as part of the agreement.
Comfortable in an attacking midfield role or on either flank, Adetola is regarded for his pace, technical quality and ability to operate effectively in tight spaces. His performances at youth level earned him recognition as a Nigeria youth international before attracting interest from the Finnish champions.
The teenager has already started training with Klubi 04, HJK’s reserve side, as he begins adapting to life in Finland. He is expected to continue his development with the team and could make his competitive debut when Klubi 04 take on Jippo in the Ykkösliiga on July 11.
HJK Sporting Director Petri Vuorinen expressed confidence that the timing of the move will aid Adetola’s transition into European football.
Adetola will arrive in the country exceptionally soon after turning 18, which is excellent timing. He quickly gets into European football. He is very skilled with the ball in small spaces, and he is really hardworking and conscientious defensively as well. There is a lot of potential in him when he learns to use his speed even better.”
HJK described Adetola as a versatile attacking player capable of playing both centrally and out wide, highlighting his technical ability and speed as qualities that fit the club’s long-term development plans.
Adetola will now look to establish himself with Klubi 04 as he begins his European journey, with consistent performances expected to boost his chances of progressing into HJK’s senior squad.
