Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan revealed he delivered a powerful halftime message that inspired his side to a historic 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand and ended the nation’s 92 year wait for a FIFA World Cup win.

The Pharaohs trailed 1-0 at the break at BC Place in Vancouver and looked set to extend a painful record that had seen them fail to win any of their previous World Cup matches. Before Sunday’s clash, Egypt had recorded five defeats and two draws across their appearances in 1934, 1990 and 2018 despite being Africa’s most successful national team with a record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles.

Facing growing pressure to deliver a breakthrough result, Hassan challenged his players during the interval and demanded a response worthy of the supporters who had travelled to back them.

“At half-time I told the players we were not going back out onto the pitch unless we were determined to win and to draw confidence from the pride we feel from that support,” Hassan told reporters after the match.

The stern message produced exactly the reaction Egypt needed. The team returned for the second half with greater urgency, sharper movement and a clear attacking intent. Goals from Mostafa Zico, Mohamed Salah and substitute Trezeguet completed a stunning turnaround and secured Egypt’s first ever World Cup victory.

The result lifted Egypt to the top of Group G with four points from two matches after their opening 1-1 draw against Belgium. It also moved them a step closer to a historic first appearance in the knockout stages.

Hassan said the victory represented more than just three points and reflected the progress made by Egyptian football over many years.

“To the Egyptian football community, we needed time to build confidence, to capitalise on our strengths and reflect on our journey to qualification, as well as the hard work of previous generations who tried to create these opportunities.”

The former Egypt striker also stressed his desire to help the current squad build its own legacy on the global stage.

“I wanted this generation to shape its own future, to determine its own path. We also want to continue developing at the level of the national league and across African football.”

Mohamed Salah played a central role in the comeback, scoring Egypt’s second goal and providing the corner that led to Trezeguet’s decisive third. The Liverpool star looked far more influential after the tactical adjustments made at halftime.

Hassan praised his captain’s performance and suggested supporters have yet to see the best of him at this tournament.

“Salah worked hard on the pitch and this is something you should know,” Hassan added.

“I am maybe the first coach to let him play in a position that matches his danger, that matches his capabilities and qualities. We worked on so many things and I am sure we are going to see more from him… “

Egypt will now turn their attention to a crucial final Group G fixture against Iran in Seattle, knowing another positive result could secure a place in the knockout rounds and extend what is already a landmark World Cup campaign.
