Nigeria international Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer to Coventry City F.C. from Brentford F.C. for an undisclosed fee, following a successful loan spell that culminated in the Sky Blues’ return to the Premier League, Trybal News reports.

The 28-year-old midfielder initially joined Frank Lampard’s side during the January transfer window on a loan deal that included an obligation to buy if Coventry secured promotion. That clause was automatically activated after the Sky Blues clinched the Championship title, earning promotion to the English top flight for the first time in 25 years. The transfer officially comes into effect on July 1.

Onyeka quickly became a key figure in Coventry’s midfield, bringing Premier League experience, defensive solidity and relentless work rate to the heart of the team during the decisive second half of the campaign. He made 14 Championship appearances, starting 13 matches, and scored a vital winner in Coventry’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Derby County in April as the club marched towards the league title.

Speaking after sealing the move, Onyeka expressed his excitement about continuing his journey with the newly promoted club.

When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals, to win the Championship and help Coventry get promoted to the Premier League. I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League. I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my teammates and bring my experience,” Onyeka said.

The transfer brings an end to Onyeka’s five-year stay at Brentford, where he made 87 appearances in all competitions, including 75 in the Premier League, after arriving from Danish champions FC Midtjylland in 2021. Brentford Director of Football Phil Giles praised the midfielder for his commitment, professionalism and loyalty throughout his time at the club.

With his future now secured, Onyeka is set to play a pivotal role as Coventry prepare for the challenges of the 2026/27 Premier League season under Frank Lampard.
