Despite suffering a 2-1 defeat at the Bingu National Stadium, the Falconets advanced thanks to the crucial 2-0 first-leg advantage earned a week earlier in Ikenne, Ogun State.

That first-leg victory came through an own goal by Malawian defender Maureen Kenneth and a well-taken strike from Kindness Ifeanyi, giving Nigeria a solid platform heading into the decisive encounter.

Backed by a passionate home crowd in Lilongwe, Malawi started aggressively and immediately put the Nigerian defence under pressure. The hosts found an early breakthrough in the first half after a defensive lapse allowed Faith Chimzimu to head home and ignite hopes of a comeback.

Nigeria responded positively and nearly restored their aggregate cushion midway through the half. Kindness Ifeanyi, who was one of the standout performers across both legs, delivered a dangerous cross from the right wing which was met powerfully by Favour Nkwocha, but her effort crashed against the woodwork.

The Young Scorchers continued to push with intensity and were rewarded again in the 55th minute. Another moment of hesitation at the back allowed Chimzimu to complete her brace and level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate, leaving the Falconets staring at the possibility of a historic collapse.

With the pressure mounting, head coach Moses Aduku turned to his bench in search of inspiration and it arrived almost instantly.

Substitute Precious Oscar proved decisive in the 62nd minute with a moment of determination and composure. The forward pressed aggressively to dispossess a Malawian defender caught in possession before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper to hand Nigeria a priceless away goal and restore their aggregate lead.

The goal shifted momentum back in Nigeria’s favour and silenced the previously vibrant atmosphere inside the stadium. Malawi continued to search for another breakthrough, but the Falconets managed the closing stages with resilience and maturity to confirm qualification for the global tournament.

The result means Nigeria remain the only African nation to qualify for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 2002.

The Falconets also remain Africa’s most successful side at the tournament, having finished runners-up twice, in 2010 and 2014 losing to Germany on both occasions.

Nigeria’s route to Poland 2026 saw the Falconets eliminate Rwanda, Senegal and Malawi during the qualification campaign, underlining their dominance on the continent once again.

The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will take place in Poland from September 5 to 26, with the Falconets now aiming to challenge for a historic first world title.

At the end of the encounter, the Nigerian delegation also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Ambassador Ibrahim Miringa, and officials of the Nigerian mission in Malawi for their support and hospitality throughout the team’s stay in the southern African nation.
