Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finally captured the Commonwealth Games title that had long eluded him, producing a championship-winning throw of 21.07m to strike gold in the men’s shot put and further strengthen Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Trybal News reports.

The Nigerian star held his nerve in a dramatic final, edging New Zealand’s Tom Walsh by just four centimetres after Walsh registered 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln completed the podium with a best effort of 20.99m in one of the closest field events of the Games.

For Enekwechi, the victory represents the culmination of years of perseverance at the highest level. Despite establishing himself as Nigeria’s greatest-ever shot putter, winning continental titles, reaching Olympic and World Championship finals, and becoming the first Nigerian to surpass the 22-metre barrier, a Commonwealth gold had remained missing from his collection until Thursday.

“This is a special moment,” Enekwechi’s performance suggested, as he finally completed his medal collection on one of the biggest stages in international athletics.

The triumph also reinforces Nigeria’s growing reputation in the throwing events. Earlier in Glasgow, Jessica Oji claimed a breakthrough silver medal in the women’s shot put, while Goodness Nwachukwu delivered a world-record performance to secure para athletics gold.

Enekwechi’s success lifted Nigeria’s medal tally to 15 medals, eight gold, five silver and two bronze with athletics continuing to drive the nation’s challenge on the medals table.

As Team Nigeria pushes for more podium finishes before the Games conclude, Enekwechi’s long-awaited Commonwealth crown stands as another defining chapter in an outstanding campaign, rewarding years of dedication with the biggest prize of his illustrious career.
