Saudi Arabia produced a disciplined and resilient performance to earn a valuable 1-1 draw against Uruguay in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Miami Stadium.

The result ensured all four teams in Group H finished the opening round level on one point after Spain and Cabo Verde also shared the spoils earlier in the group.

Uruguay entered the contest as favourites and were looking to begin their campaign with a victory against a Saudi Arabian side they defeated 1-0 when the teams last met at the FIFA World Cup in Russia eight years ago. However, the Saudis showed tremendous organisation and determination to frustrate the South Americans for long periods.

Uruguay started brightly and created the first meaningful opportunity after just six minutes. Maxi Araujo found space on the edge of the penalty area before spinning and firing a powerful effort towards goal. Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais reacted well to push the ball away.

The resulting corner found Matias Vina inside the box, but the defender failed to generate enough power with his header to trouble Al Owais.

Uruguay continued to control possession and threatened again on the half-hour mark. Saudi Arabia struggled to clear their lines after sustained pressure, allowing the ball to be delivered back into the area. Federico Vinas met the cross with a diving header, but Al Owais produced another excellent save to keep the scores level.

Saudi Arabia gradually grew into the game and began to cause problems from set pieces.

Eight minutes later, Musab Al Juwayr delivered a dangerous free kick into the Uruguay penalty area. The ball was eventually cleared for a corner, and the Saudis nearly capitalised. Abdulelah Al Amri found himself completely unmarked at the back post and struck a powerful effort on target, only for veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to make an important save.

The pressure from Saudi Arabia eventually paid off in the 41st minute.

Another well-worked corner created panic inside the Uruguay box. Hassan Al Tambakti powered a header towards goal, and although Muslera initially got his hands to the ball, he could not gather it cleanly. The rebound fell kindly for Abdulelah Al Amri, who reacted quickest to bundle the ball into the net and give Saudi Arabia a deserved lead.

The goal capped an impressive first-half display from the Saudis, who defended with discipline and shape while remaining dangerous from dead-ball situations.

Uruguay emerged after the break with greater urgency and immediately began pushing for an equaliser. Saudi Arabia, however, remained compact and organised across the pitch, making life difficult for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The closest Uruguay came to levelling the score arrived in the 60th minute.

Manuel Ugarte unleashed a fierce low strike from long range that appeared destined for the corner. Instead, the effort crashed against the post, leaving Saudi Arabia relieved to preserve their advantage.

As the second half progressed, Uruguay increased the pressure and pinned Saudi Arabia deeper inside their own half. Time and again, Al Owais came to his team’s rescue with a series of outstanding saves.

The Saudi goalkeeper eventually finished the match with nine saves, the highest total recorded by any goalkeeper at the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.

His resistance was finally broken in the 80th minute.

Federico Vinas rose highest to meet a cross and forced another strong save from Al Owais. This time, however, the rebound fell directly into the path of Maxi Araujo, who made no mistake. The winger drove a precise effort across goal and into the corner to bring Uruguay level.

The equaliser felt inevitable given Uruguay’s dominance in the second half, but Saudi Arabia refused to buckle under the pressure.

Both teams searched for a late winner during the closing stages, yet neither side managed to find the decisive breakthrough.

The final whistle confirmed a deserved point for Saudi Arabia, whose defensive resilience and goalkeeping heroics frustrated one of South America’s traditional powerhouses.

Uruguay will feel they created enough chances to win the match, particularly after dominating large stretches of the second half. However, they found Mohammed Al Owais in inspired form throughout the evening.

For Saudi Arabia, the result represents an encouraging start to their FIFA World Cup campaign. They showed defensive discipline, threat from set pieces and tremendous character against one of the tournament’s most experienced teams.

With Spain and Cabo Verde also drawing in the group’s other fixture, Group H remains perfectly balanced after the opening round of matches, setting up a fascinating battle for qualification in the weeks ahead.
