Kylian Mbappe delivered another unforgettable performance as France cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden at New York New Jersey Stadium to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The France captain scored twice to take his World Cup tally to 18 goals and moved level with Lionel Messi as the joint top scorer of the 2026 tournament with six goals.

Didier Deschamps made four changes to the side that dismantled Norway 4-1 in the previous round, where Ousmane Dembele scored a hat trick. William Saliba returned from a back issue to replace Maxence Lacroix in central defence, while Lucas Digne came in for Theo Hernandez at left back. Adrien Rabiot replaced Manu Kone in midfield and Bradley Barcola started ahead of Desire Doue on the left wing. Marcus Thuram recovered from a calf problem to earn a place on the bench.

Sweden boss Graham Potter made two changes following the draw against Japan. Lucas Bergvall replaced the injured Isak Hien, who missed the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Bergvall became Sweden’s second youngest World Cup starter after Jesper Blomqvist in 1994. Daniel Svensson also came into the side at wing back in place of Bernhardsson.

France controlled possession from the start and created the first meaningful chances. Lucas Digne tested Jacob Widell Zetterstrom with a long range strike before Mbappe also tried his luck from distance, but both efforts were comfortably saved by the Swedish goalkeeper.

Barcola then sparked into life in the 19th minute, skipping past Lagerbielke before driving into the penalty area, although he fired over the crossbar from a tight angle. A minute later, Mbappe thought he had opened the scoring after racing clear and finishing calmly past Zetterstrom, but the assistant referee correctly ruled the goal out for offside.

France continued to pile on the pressure after the cooling break. Mbappe slipped a clever pass into Rabiot, whose powerful effort from a narrow angle forced another good save from Zetterstrom. Moments later, Mbappe came within inches of breaking the deadlock when Jules Kounde’s cutback found him unmarked at the far post, but his first time effort struck the upright before the goalkeeper gathered the loose ball.

The French attack kept coming. Rabiot fired narrowly over from long range before Michael Olise almost produced one of the goals of the tournament with an overhead kick that crashed off the post. Dembele collected the rebound but curled his effort just wide.

France finished the first half strongly. Olise narrowly missed from the edge of the box before testing Zetterstrom again with a low drive from distance. Their pressure finally paid off in first half stoppage time.

Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 45th minute after France worked a clever short corner routine involving Olise and Dembele. The captain collected the ball inside the area, skipped past a challenge and calmly placed his finish into the far corner to give France a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.

France dominated the opening half with 71.1 percent possession and generated 1.1 expected goals compared to Sweden’s 0.29. Mbappe’s opener also marked the sixth World Cup goal combination between him and Dembele, setting a new tournament record for the most goals created by the same attacking duo.

France doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute with another flowing move. A loose Swedish pass was intercepted by Aurelien Tchouameni, who quickly found Olise. The Bayern Munich playmaker threaded a superb pass through the defence to Barcola, who took one touch before firing beyond Zetterstrom to make it 2-0.

Olise’s fourth assist of the tournament made him the leading French creator in a single World Cup edition and drew him level with Brazil’s Bruno Guimaraes at the top of the assist standings.

The French playmaker almost added a goal of his own eight minutes later, but Zetterstrom produced another fine save to push away his curling effort from the edge of the box.

France should have wrapped up the contest in the 71st minute. Mbappe led a lightning counterattack before picking out Olise, but the midfielder’s heavy touch allowed Zetterstrom to rush off his line and make an important block.

Three minutes later, Mbappe put the result beyond doubt with another moment of brilliance. Olise produced another perfectly weighted through ball to record his fifth assist of the tournament, and Mbappe timed his run to perfection before bending a trademark finish into the far corner for his second goal of the night and sixth of the competition.

The goal also secured another milestone as France became the first nation in World Cup history to score three or more goals in five consecutive tournament matches.

France continued to attack until the final whistle. Barcola forced another save from Zetterstrom after a clever run, while Sweden’s best chance finally arrived in the 89th minute when Viktor Gyokeres unleashed a fierce first time strike, only for Mike Maignan to make a comfortable save.

France comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to seal an emphatic 3-0 victory and secure their place in the Round of 16. Mbappe once again stole the spotlight with two goals, taking his World Cup tally to 18 and matching Lionel Messi as the tournament’s leading scorer with six goals in 2026.

It was another statement performance from Didier Deschamps’ side, who continue to look like one of the favourites for the title. If France maintain this level, they will take some stopping in the race to lift the World Cup trophy.
