Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players’ character after their dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, describing them as “Canadian heroes” following a historic night in Los Angeles.
Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage time winner secured Canada’s first ever victory in a World Cup knockout match and booked the co hosts a place in the Round of 16. After the final whistle, an emotional Marsch reflected on his team’s determination and resilience in a hard fought contest.
Speaking about the winning goal and his team’s performance, Jesse Marsch said: “We knew the game would get a little wild at sometimes because they like to play in open spaces and sometimes, in transition, they can be very difficult to deal with. We tried to make sure that we kept our structure and we tried to say we keep ramping up the level of the game and come from the bench and get stronger and see if we could punish them at some point. We had chances in the whole game, but we weren’t lethal enough. Then it fell to Steph and I’m just hoping he puts it on frame and gives us a chance. He buries it. I can’t help but think of all the hard work from these guys. The character. They are Canadian heroes, that’s what I told them at the end. They are now Canadian heroes. I am so happy for them.”
Marsch also praised Moïse Bombito and Alphonso Davies for their important contributions. Bombito delivered an impressive display despite not being fully fit, while Davies made an immediate impact after coming off the bench.
Discussing both players, Marsch said: “Moise, you can see, is close to himself but not 100% yet. But his performance for me in the first half was outstanding. I said from the beginning, Alphonso will have the quality but he will bring a lift. And of course, the opponent has to worry about him. I thought that’s what he did. Now, we’ll be able to invest more into him physically and have him for more minutes in the next game. But in the end, the whole group dug in. Wasn’t an easy game, we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game. Thought we could be better on the day, but we had to prove it and at the end, we did.”
With Canada now preparing for the biggest match in their World Cup history, Jesse Marsch revealed his immediate plans to scout their next opponents before leading his side into the Round of 16.
Looking ahead to the next challenge, he said: “I’m flying to Monterrey today to go to the game. Tomorrow, I’ll be in the stadium. I’ll check what’s going on, I’ll make sure our guys get a good reach in and they’re going to be ready to throw everything at a giant. Maybe it’s the Netherlands, maybe it’s Morocco. But this is what I wanted. I wanted to show that they deserved the right to go after a giant and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Canada’s dramatic victory has extended their remarkable World Cup journey and strengthened belief within the squad. After overcoming South Africa in unforgettable fashion, Marsch’s side now head into the Round of 16 full of confidence and determined to challenge whichever football giant awaits them next.
