Bafana Bafana remain in the hunt for a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but their 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic felt like a missed opportunity as much as an achievement.

After falling behind inside six minutes, South Africa fought back through Teboho Mokoena’s late penalty to secure a point in their second Group stage match. While the result kept their hopes alive, it did little to improve their position heading into a decisive final round of fixtures.

With both South Africa and the Czech Republic sitting on one point, the equation has become simple. Bafana Bafana must beat South Korea to have any realistic chance of progressing.

The draw prevented disaster. However, it also ensured there is no room for error.

Bafana Bafana Must Turn Possession Into Purpose

The biggest lesson from the Czech Republic match is obvious.

Bafana Bafana controlled possession but failed to control the game.

South Africa enjoyed 61.9 percent of the ball and completed an impressive 563 passes. Yet those numbers masked a frustrating lack of attacking penetration. Too often, possession remained harmless. The ball moved across the pitch rather than through the opposition.

Only 27 percent of South Africa’s passes were played forward, an astonishingly low figure for a team chasing victory. Even the Czech Republic, despite spending long periods defending, recorded a higher percentage of forward passes.

Possession without purpose rarely wins World Cup matches.

If South Africans want to beat South Korea, they must become far more aggressive in the final third.

The Attack Must Find Iqraam Rayners Earlier

Bafana Bafana’s inability to get Iqraam Rayners into dangerous positions remains a major concern.

The striker worked hard throughout his 66 minutes on the pitch and remained involved in build-up play. However, most of his touches came far away from goal. Instead of attacking central areas, Rayners often found himself drifting wide or dropping deep to help teammates retain possession.

He finished with only one shot and generated just 0.06 expected goals.

For a team that wants to progress beyond the group stage, that simply is not enough involvement for its main striker.

South Africa’s midfield must take more risks and find Rayners between defensive lines. The forwards also need to make more aggressive runs beyond the opposition back line.

The talent is there. The service must improve.

Teboho Mokoena’s Suspension Could Be a Massive Blow

Bafana Bafana now face their toughest challenge without one of their most influential players.

Teboho Mokoena not only scored the equalising penalty but also produced another outstanding display in midfield. He created five chances, matching the highest number ever recorded by a South African player in a World Cup match. Only Quinton Fortune managed the same total against Paraguay in 2002.

Unfortunately, Mokoena’s yellow card triggered a suspension.

Unless Bafana Bafana defeat South Korea and advance, his World Cup campaign may already be over.

His absence leaves a huge hole in South Africa’s midfield.

Mokoena provides creativity, leadership, defensive discipline and composure under pressure. Replacing all of those qualities with one player will be impossible.

Now Hugo Broos must find a solution quickly.

Hugo Broos Must Be Brave

The final group match calls for courage.

Bafana Bafana cannot approach South Korea with the same level of caution they showed against the Czech Republic. While maintaining defensive balance remains important, South Africa need to show greater urgency and ambition.

The positive news is that they already possess the technical players capable of causing problems.

The midfield can dominate possession. The wide players can create overloads. The defence has shown resilience throughout the tournament.

What is missing is the willingness to attack with conviction.

Against the Czech Republic, South Africa often looked content to recycle possession instead of exploiting openings.

That approach cannot continue.

Fortunately for Bafana Bafana, there is a recent example of how to frustrate South Korea.

Mexico exposed weaknesses in the Korean build-up structure by aggressively compressing space in midfield. South Korea attempted to construct attacks patiently through their 3-2-5 shape, completing hundreds of passes inside their own half while waiting for opponents to overcommit.

Mexico refused to cooperate.

Instead, they pressed intelligently and squeezed the gaps between midfield and defence. Even when South Korea successfully attracted pressure, they found very little space available to exploit.

The result was simple.

South Korea were forced to play longer passes than they preferred and struggled to establish control.

Bafana Bafana should study that performance closely.

Defensive Discipline Remains Key

While much of the focus will fall on South Africa’s attacking shortcomings, there were positives.

After conceding early, Bafana Bafana settled into the match and prevented the Czech Republic from creating sustained pressure. The Europeans registered their fifth shot when they scored in the sixth minute but did not attempt another effort until the 41st minute.

That defensive improvement should not be overlooked.

The Czech Republic appeared content to protect their lead, but South Africa still showed patience and composure while searching for an equaliser.

That resilience could become crucial against South Korea, whose technical players thrive when opponents lose their shape.

The encouraging reality for Bafana Bafana is that their destiny remains in their own hands.

A victory against South Korea would likely place South Africa in contention either for automatic qualification or a place among the best third placed teams.

The draw with the Czech Republic was far from perfect. Yet it ensured Bafana Bafana remain alive heading into the final round.

That alone makes Mokoena’s penalty one of the most important goals of South Africa’s recent football history.

Bafana Bafana Must Seize Their Moment

World Cups often come down to one match. For Bafana Bafana, that moment has arrived.

The draw against the Czech Republic highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of Hugo Broos’ side. They can dominate possession. They can remain organised. They can respond to adversity.

However, they must become more direct, more clinical and more adventurous.

Without Teboho Mokoena, the challenge becomes even greater.

Yet qualification remains within reach.

Beat South Korea and Bafana Bafana could still be preparing for the knockout rounds. Fail to do so, and a highly anticipated campaign that started with defeat to Mexico will end with regret.

The opportunity is there. Now Bafana Bafana must take it.
