The United States took a major step towards the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds with a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia at Seattle Stadium on Friday. An early own goal from Cameron Burgess and a first half strike from Alex Freeman secured a second straight win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who now sit top of Group D with six points.
The result also ended a 96 year wait for consecutive World Cup victories by the United States men’s team. Having opened their campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay, the Americans once again produced an energetic and disciplined display to strengthen their qualification hopes.
Before kick-off, both teams arrived with perfect records after winning their opening matches. However, they had achieved those victories in very different ways. The USA overwhelmed Paraguay with relentless pressing and attacking football, while Australia stunned Türkiye with a clinical counter attacking performance despite seeing only 28 percent of possession.
The United States wasted little time asserting their dominance and took the lead in the sixth minute. Folarin Balogun burst into the penalty area and drilled a dangerous pass across the six yard box. Australia defender Cameron Burgess desperately tried to recover but could only watch as the ball deflected off his legs and into his own net.
The goal sparked huge celebrations among the home supporters and rewarded a bright start from the Americans, who controlled possession and pinned Australia deep inside their own half.
Australia almost found themselves further behind in the 15th minute. Weston McKennie rose highest to meet a corner and his header struck a defender before rebounding onto his own arm. The referee immediately awarded a handball, allowing the Socceroos to escape further punishment.
The United States continued to dominate and thought they had doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute when Alex Freeman headed home following a free kick. The assistant referee initially raised his flag for offside, but celebrations resumed moments later after a VAR review confirmed Freeman had timed his run perfectly.
The move began when the free kick fell to Sergino Dest on the edge of the area. His shot took a deflection and looped into Freeman’s path, allowing the defender to head home and make it 2-0.
Deep into first half stoppage time, the USA nearly added a third goal. Malik Tillman drove forward before feeding Dest, whose low effort forced Patrick Beach into a smart save.
The Americans headed into the break in complete control. They finished the opening 45 minutes with nine shots and 70 percent possession, earning a standing ovation from their supporters as they left the pitch.

Their attacking form has been one of the stories of the tournament so far. The USA had already scored six goals after just one and a half matches, putting them on course to surpass their previous World Cup scoring records set in 1930 and 2002.
Pochettino’s team carried that momentum into the second half. They moved the ball confidently and forced Australia to spend long periods chasing possession.
Australia showed signs of improvement after the restart. In the 52nd minute, Jacob Italiano attempted to spark an attack with a cross from the right, but it failed to beat the first defender. The USA immediately launched a dangerous counter attack, with Balogun racing clear before his shot was blocked for a corner.
The Socceroos’ best attacking threat came through 20 year old forward Nestory Irankunda. In the 63rd minute, the Watford attacker drove down the right flank and cut the ball back for substitute Cristian Volpato. However, Volpato failed to hit the target with his first time effort.
Australia enjoyed more possession during the closing stages and briefly appealed for a penalty after Irankunda went down inside the box. The referee waved away the claims, judging that the contact was not enough to award a spot kick.
The USA remained dangerous on the counter attack and nearly wrapped up the win in stoppage time. Malik Tillman once again drove through the Australian defence but could not find the final pass after opening up the visitors.
One of the most unusual moments of the match arrived in the 94th minute when referee Felix Zwayer collapsed with cramp. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch to assist him, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. After some stretching and treatment, the official recovered and was able to continue.
When the final whistle arrived, the USA had secured a deserved 2-0 victory and another three valuable points. Their intensity, organisation and attacking quality once again proved too much for their opponents.
The win leaves the Americans on six points at the top of Group D and within touching distance of the knockout stage officially. They will face Türkiye in their final group match, while Australia must beat Paraguay to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
It was also the first World Cup meeting between the USA and Australia. Their previous four encounters had all been friendlies, with the Americans extending their recent dominance after victories in 2010 and 2025.
