Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka played the full 90 minutes as Coventry City ended their 25 year wait for a Premier League victory with a dramatic 1 0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Jay Dasilva scored the only goal for Frank Lampard’s side, while Forest had a late equaliser ruled out after a VAR review.

The result gave Coventry their first league win of the campaign and their first victory at the City Ground since 2004.

Lampard’s side had endured a difficult start to life in the Premier League, losing their opening four matches and conceding 10 goals against a demanding run of opponents.

However, Coventry finally claimed their first points and moved up to 18th in the table. Forest, meanwhile, suffered their second defeat in all competitions and remain 12th with five points.

The hosts thought they had rescued a point late in the game. However, referee Jarred Gillett overturned the equaliser after VAR Paul Howard advised him to review the incident.

After checking the footage, Gillett ruled that Igor Jesus had tripped Caleb Yirenkyi during the build up to the goal.

The decision gave Coventry a crucial escape after several narrow defeats earlier in the season. It also provided a major psychological lift for Lampard and his players.

After Coventry’s defeat by Brighton, Lampard said: “We went one down from a moment of quality. Welcome to the Premier League,” acknowledging the demands of the division.

Despite their difficult start, Coventry have shown encouraging signs, particularly through their physical approach. Lampard has built a squad that can compete physically, with strength, collective discipline and aerial ability among its key qualities.

Jack Rudoni has also played an important role in their attacking play. Before the Forest match, he had created eight chances and taken five shots without finding a breakthrough.

Coventry can now look ahead with greater confidence after surviving an extremely difficult opening schedule. Their early fixtures included trips to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.

The victory should give Lampard’s side a platform to build momentum and make better use of the creative opportunities they have produced in the opening weeks.

Onyeka played a key role in the midfield battle. The Nigeria international completed 22 of his 29 passes and recorded 42 touches during the match.

He also made six defensive contributions and covered 11.8km over the 90 minutes, underlining his work rate in a tightly contested encounter.

Onyeka will now link up with the Super Eagles squad in Uyo as Nigeria prepare for their AFCON 2027 qualifying matches.
