Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has been fined £25,000 by the Football Association after criticising match officials following his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, Trybal News reports
The FA also issued the Spaniard with an official warning over his future conduct. The sanctions follow his comments after the Premier League match at Craven Cottage on September 20.
The governing body considered Arbeloa’s remarks improper because they questioned the integrity of the officials and suggested they had shown bias during the game.
An independent commission examined the case and outlined its reasons for the punishment. It said the coach’s comments went beyond frustration with individual decisions and suggested officials may have deliberately tried to influence the result.
The commission “felt that those words suggested, not only that there was bias on the part of the match officials throughout the game on repeated occasions, but also that there may even have been an element of pre-meditation by them and/or others to try to make up for an error in a different match.”
Arbeloa Questioned Officials after Man United Draw
The case stems from Arbeloa’s angry post match interview after Fulham drew 1 1 with Manchester United. The coach expressed his frustration with several decisions and suggested the officials were favouring the visitors.
His remarks came after United’s previous match against Manchester City, which appeared to shape his view of the officiating at Craven Cottage.
“I think all fouls for them. Every decision was for them, and I knew, I knew after the game against Man City that they don’t let Manchester United lose here,” Arbeloa said at the time, as quoted by Daily Mail.
The FA took issue with the suggestion that officials had deliberately favoured one side or tried to compensate for an error in another match. Such claims can undermine confidence in the fairness of the competition.
The £25,000 fine and formal warning underline the governing body’s stance on public comments about refereeing. Club managers can question decisions, but accusations that officials acted with bias or intent can lead to disciplinary action.
Arbeloa must now avoid similar comments as Fulham continue their Premier League campaign.
