Defending champions Nigeria will begin the defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown on Tuesday night when they face tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, Trybal News reports.
The Super Falcons, who reclaimed the continental title in dramatic fashion last year with a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final, are determined to start their latest campaign with an emphatic victory.
However, Head Coach Justine Madugu has warned against underestimating the Scorchers, insisting every team at the tournament has earned its place and deserves respect.
We have huge respect for all our opponents. Every team that qualifies for this tournament deserves commendation and a lot of respect. Yes, they are debutants, but they are a very good side. We don’t take anything for granted. Everybody is coming here with a purpose and a mission,” Madugu said during Monday’s pre-match press conference.
The Nigerian coach added that the Super Falcons remain focused on their primary objective.
We are here for the defence of the WAFCON trophy and the team is fully ready and set to go. We will stick to our game plan and our mission.”
Nigeria enter the contest as overwhelming favourites, but Malawi possess genuine attacking threats in sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga, who are capable of changing the course of any match. Coach Lovemore Fazili’s side also boasts a disciplined squad that impressed during the qualifiers and has shown it can compete against some of Africa’s strongest teams.
The Super Falcons are expected to rely on captain Rasheedat Ajibade to inspire the team, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defenders Michelle Alozie and Osinachi Ohale, midfielders Deborah Abiodun and Halimatu Ayinde, alongside forwards Asisat Oshoala, Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo are all in contention to start.
Nigeria’s depth could also prove decisive, with experienced internationals Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, Gift Monday and Omorinsola Babajide among the quality options available from the bench.
The encounter, scheduled to kick off at 9:00 p.m. Nigeria time, marks the beginning of another title quest for Africa’s most successful women’s national team, who will be aiming to make an early statement as they pursue another continental triumph.
