Lawal dominated the event from the outset, opening with a remarkable 103kg lift in the snatch to establish a nine-kilogram advantage over Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau. The lift set a new Commonwealth Games record and put the Nigerian firmly on course for the title.

She returned for the clean and jerk and successfully lifted 126kg, finishing with a combined total of 229kg to seal the gold medal and further improve the Commonwealth Games record.
