Erling Haaland struck a late winner as Norway defeated Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash at Dallas Stadium, securing the nation’s first ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.
Cote d’Ivoire arrived in the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history and looked determined to keep breaking new ground. Les Éléphants had won two of their three group matches, finishing second in their section. They had also scored the opening goal in every group game and spent just three minutes and 29 seconds trailing throughout the entire group stage, during their late defeat to Germany.
Head coach Emerse Fae made three changes to the side that beat Curacao 2-0. Ghislain Konan, Agbadou and Oulai returned to the starting lineup, while Diallo, Operi and Ousmane Diomande dropped to the bench.
Norway boss Stale Solbakken also reshuffled his squad after making 10 changes against France. Patrick Berg remained the only survivor from that defeat, while Martin Odegaard, Sander Berge and Erling Haaland all returned to the starting XI. Norway also became the first nation to make 10 or more changes to its starting lineup in consecutive World Cup matches during a single tournament.
Backed by a strong Norwegian following inside the 108,000-capacity Dallas Stadium, Norway settled into the contest quickly. However, it was Cote d’Ivoire who created the first opportunity in the 10th minute after Heggem’s interception gifted them a corner, though Pepe’s delivery drifted harmlessly over everyone.
The African side continued to threaten. Konan cut inside brilliantly in the 22nd minute before firing narrowly into the side-netting. Moments later, Nicolas Pepe delivered a dangerous cross after Yan Diomande had beaten Pedersen, but Bonny failed to apply the finishing touch. Cote d’Ivoire looked increasingly dangerous as Norway struggled to deal with their attacking movement.
Norway weathered the pressure and struck first in spectacular fashion in the 39th minute. Antonio Nusa drove into the penalty area, shifted onto his right foot and curled a stunning effort into the far top corner to give his side a 1-0 lead. It was his ninth international goal and arguably his biggest, while Odegaard claimed the assist after growing into the match.
The Europeans nearly doubled their lead before halftime. Alexander Sorloth won a knockdown inside the area, but Haaland could not connect cleanly from close range before Agbadou made a crucial block. Norway entered the break ahead thanks to Nusa’s brilliant strike after a closely contested first half.
Cote d’Ivoire resumed strongly after the restart. Pepe forced Orjan Nyland into an excellent save with a curling effort in the 56th minute, while Haaland produced a vital defensive header eight minutes later to clear Amad Diallo’s dangerous cross inside his own penalty area.
Norway almost extended their advantage in the 68th minute when Odegaard’s corner caused chaos. Sorloth’s header dropped kindly for Heggem, whose powerful effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Diallo to keep Cote d’Ivoire in the contest.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 74th minute through a moment of individual brilliance. Diallo combined with Pepe in a clever one-two before gliding past Moller Wolfe and Berge. The Manchester United winger then calmly curled his finish beyond Nyland to make it 1-1. It marked his second goal as a substitute at the tournament, making him only the third player to score twice off the bench for an African nation at a single FIFA World Cup after Roger Milla for Cameroon in 1990 and Pape Gueye for Senegal in 2026.

Just when extra time looked inevitable, Norway found the decisive breakthrough in the 86th minute. Oscar Bobb threaded a superb pass into Berg, whose perfectly weighted cross across the six yard box found Haaland for a simple finish. The goal was Haaland’s 60th for Norway in just 53 appearances and proved to be the match winner.
Cote d’Ivoire pushed desperately for another equaliser during stoppage time. Konan’s dangerous cross caused uncertainty for Nyland, while Odegaard’s late foul handed the Africans one final opportunity. Diallo’s superb free kick looked destined for the top corner, but Nyland produced one of the saves of the tournament to preserve Norway’s advantage.
Norway held firm through the closing moments to seal a famous 2-1 victory. Haaland’s late strike sent the Scandinavians into the last 16 and secured the country’s first ever World Cup knockout win. Cote d’Ivoire fought bravely throughout and came close to forcing extra time, but Norway ultimately edged a fiercely contested encounter decided by the finest of margins.
