Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has been drafted into the Super Eagles squad as a late replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies.
Bassey was ruled out earlier with a back injury, leaving the squad short of options in central defence going into games against Iran and Jordan. His absence reduced the number of natural centre-backs available, forcing head coach Eric Chelle to make a quick adjustment.
Before Chibuike Nwaiwu inclusion, Semi Ajayi and Igoh Ogbu were the only experienced pairing available at the back, with newly invited Emmanuel Fernandez providing the only cover on the bench.
Nwaiwu’s call-up offers much-needed depth, with the defender expected to link up with the squad immediately and take part in training as Nigeria fine-tune preparations for the two fixtures.
The 24-year-old former Enyimba and Heartland star has been in solid form since his move to Trabzonspor during the January transfer window. After joining from Austrian side Wolfsberger, he quickly established himself as a regular in the heart of defence, making 10 appearances and scoring twice while racking up over 770 minutes of action so far.
His recent performances and growing consistency at club level appear to have convinced Chelle that he can step in and provide reliable cover as the Super Eagles look to navigate the friendlies despite the late defensive setback.
