Emmanuel Fernandez has decided to represent Nigeria at international level following discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, Trybal News reports.
The 24 year old defender, who has impressed this season, was recently approached by the Nigeria Football Federation about switching allegiance. After holding talks with Chelle, Fernandez has now given his assurance that he wants to be considered for selection in Nigeria’s upcoming friendly matches against Iraq and Jordan later this month as exclusively revealed to OwnGoalNigeria.com.
As reported by Scottish national tabloid newspaper based in Glasgow Daily Record, Emmanuel Fernandez was eligible to play for both England and Nigeria through family ties but has chosen to commit his future to the Super Eagles. He has already begun the process of applying for a Nigerian passport, which is required before he can be officially selected to play for the national team.
Nigeria are also awaiting a decision from FIFA regarding a complaint filed against DR Congo. The Nigerian federation reported DR Congo over the eligibility of two players, Aaron Wan Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, who featured in their World Cup play off defeat in November. Nigeria believe the players may not have been eligible at the time.
A ruling on the matter is expected soon. DR Congo are currently scheduled to face either New Caledonia or Jamaica in the World Cup intercontinental play off on March 31.
