Former Morocco national football team captain Romain Saiss has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Atlas Lions, Trybal News reports.

Saiss confirmed his decision in a message shared on his Instagram account, describing it as the closing of “the most beautiful chapter” of his life as a footballer after careful reflection. He said representing Morocco and captaining the national team was the greatest honour of his career, adding that the jersey symbolised roots, family and pride beyond sport.

In his farewell message, Romain Saiss reflected on his journey from childhood dreams to leading his country on the international stage. He thanked his teammates, describing them as brothers who became family over time. He also expressed appreciation to coaches, technical staff and medical teams for their trust and support throughout his years with the national side.

He paid tribute to the fans for their unwavering encouragement and acknowledged the role of Mohammed VI in advancing Moroccan football through improved infrastructure and professional development. Saiss noted that these efforts have helped position Morocco as a respected force in global football.

Saiss earned 86 international caps after making his debut in 2012 and was a central figure in Morocco’s historic run to the semi finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team became the first African nation to reach the last four of the competition.

“I leave the national team, but I will always remain a Lion,” he said, reaffirming his enduring connection to the national side as he steps away from international duty.
