Nigeria will take on Morocco in the 2026 Davis Cup World Group II after the official draw conducted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), setting up a crucial away fixture for the Nigerian side scheduled for September 18–20.

The pairing marks another important step for Team Nigeria, who recently secured promotion to World Group II following a hard-fought playoff victory over Uzbekistan at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

Nigeria’s Path to the Draw

Nigeria booked their place in the competition with a commanding 3–1 triumph over Uzbekistan, sealing the tie with a match to spare. Daniel Adeleye proved decisive, delivering a composed 6–3, 6–4 win in the reverse singles to hand the hosts an unassailable lead and confirm qualification.

The victory was widely celebrated as a major milestone for Nigerian tennis, reflecting the squad’s discipline and collective effort in achieving a return to the World Group II level.

What the Competition Means

World Group II features 26 nations drawn against each other based on ranking, with ties played on a home-or-away basis over two days.

Each tie is decided through a best-of-five matches format, two singles on the opening day, followed by the doubles and the reverse singles with the first team to win three matches claiming victory. All matches are contested as best of three tiebreak sets.

The stakes are high, as winning nations advance to the 2027 World Group I play-offs, while losing teams must compete again in the World Group II play-offs to maintain their position.

Tough Away Challenge

Playing away against Morocco presents a stern test for the Nigerian team, but their recent performance in Lagos suggests growing confidence and momentum within the squad. With promotion already secured, attention will now shift to preparation, team selection, and strategy ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.

For Nigeria, the clash represents more than just another Davis Cup tie, it is an opportunity to continue their upward trajectory in international tennis and move a step closer to competing among the higher-ranked nations in the global team event.
