Ogun State has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran sports journalist and broadcaster, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde, who passed away on the night of February 12, 2026 after a prolonged illness Trybal News reports.
Akeem Akintunde, a former Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Ogun State chapter and Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television, was widely regarded as one of the leading voices in sports journalism in the state. His death has drawn tributes from government officials, football administrators and colleagues within the media industry.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described the late broadcaster as a major loss to the state and the media profession. In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the governor praised Akintunde as a thoroughbred media professional and accomplished manager whose dedication to duty remained strong even while battling serious health challenges, including kidney related ailments.
“As a media professional, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde was an outstanding personality — pleasant to be with and completely dedicated to his job. He was a manager of managers, a mentor to many, and a shining light in journalism and sports reporting,” the governor said.
“His passage marks the end of a remarkable career built on dedication, excellence, and unwavering commitment to the profession.”
Governor Abiodun extended condolences to the family, friends and the OGTV community, praying for eternal rest for the deceased and strength for those he left behind.
Chairman of the Ogun State Football Association, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, also paid tribute, describing Akintunde as a pillar of integrity and a strong advocate for sports development.
“Alhaji Akeem Akintunde was not just a journalist; he was a builder of men and institutions. His courage, discipline, and dedication to truth set him apart. Ogun football and the entire sports community have lost a strong voice and a dependable ally. His contributions to sports journalism and football administration will remain indelible,” Majekodunmi said.
The Ogun State chapter of SWAN expressed deep shock over the loss of its former chairman, highlighting his commitment to the growth of sports journalism and his role in fostering unity within the association.
“Alhaji Akintunde was a committed professional, an exemplary leader, and a passionate advocate for sports development in Ogun State and Nigeria at large.
During his tenure as Chairman of Ogun SWAN, Alhaji Akintunde demonstrated uncommon dedication to the growth of sports journalism, fostering unity among members and strengthening the association’s relationship with key stakeholders in the sports sector.
His contributions to the advancement of sports reporting and administration in the state remain indelible. He was widely respected for his integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alhaji Akintunde was a mentor and father figure to many young sports journalists, offering guidance and support that shaped numerous careers.
The news of his demise is a monumental loss not only to SWAN Ogun but also to the entire sporting community in the state and across Nigeria. His legacy of service, discipline, and dedication will continue to inspire generations of sports writers.

According to the family, the Janazah prayer for Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde will hold at the Secretariat Muslim Community Central Mosque, opposite Central Bank of Nigeria Abeokuta, at 3.30 pm on February 12, 2026. Interment will follow at Sunnah Cemetery, Olomore, at 4.00 pm.
Akintunde’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career in sports broadcasting and administration, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, mentorship and service to the sporting community in Ogun State and beyond.
