Team Nigeria’s men’s 3×3 basketball team delivered the country’s first victory of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after defeating the Cayman Islands 21–17 in an impressive Pool A encounter on Friday, Trybal News reports.

After Nigeria’s campaign officially got underway earlier in the day in the swimming pool, it was the 3×3 basketball team that provided the first winning moment, producing a disciplined and energetic display to begin their medal chase on a positive note.

The Nigerians settled quickly into the contest, matching their opponents’ intensity before taking control through aggressive defence, quick ball movement and efficient scoring. Despite a spirited challenge from the Cayman Islands, Nigeria maintained its composure in the closing stages to seal a deserved victory and make an encouraging start to the tournament.

The result immediately strengthens Nigeria’s position in Pool A and gives the team valuable momentum as the competition progresses.

The victory was witnessed by the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, who watched from courtside and joined the players in celebrating after the final whistle.

Speaking after the game, Olopade described the performance as a reflection of the fighting spirit that Team Nigeria intends to display throughout the Games.

This victory is important because it sets the tone for the rest of our campaign. The players showed character, discipline and belief when it mattered most. We are proud of them, but this is only the beginning. We want every Nigerian athlete to compete with this same determination as we pursue our medal objectives,” he said.

His presence at the venue continued the NSC leadership’s hands-on approach in Glasgow, where officials have maintained close support for Team Nigeria across all venues. Ahead of the Games, the Commission reiterated its ambition for Nigeria to challenge consistently for podium finishes, with preparations centred on creating an environment that allows athletes to perform at their highest level.

Earlier on Friday, swimmer Clinton Opute became the first Nigerian athlete to compete at Glasgow 2026, finishing sixth in his Men’s 200m Individual Medley heat. While he did not progress, his appearance officially marked the start of Nigeria’s participation before the basketball team delivered the country’s first win.

Nigeria is represented at the Games by 74 athletes competing in 10 sports, with boxing, athletics, para powerlifting, wrestling and weightlifting expected to headline the nation’s medal push over the coming days.

The country’s rich Commonwealth Games history provides further reason for optimism. Since making its debut in 1950, Team Nigeria has established itself as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations at the Games, winning more than 270 medals across multiple editions.

With the opening hurdle successfully cleared, attention now turns to Nigeria’s remaining Pool A fixtures, where the men’s 3×3 team will be aiming to build on its impressive start and move a step closer to the knockout rounds.
