Crystal Palace are weighing up a move for Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu as the club steps up plans to replace Maxence Lacroix, who is closing in on a transfer to Chelsea, Trybal News reports.
The Eagles are expected to lose Lacroix in the coming days after Chelsea agreed a deal worth around £52 million for the French defender. With his departure imminent, Palace have begun assessing potential replacements, with Nwaiwu among the centre-backs under serious consideration.
The Nigerian international has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining Turkish side Trabzonspor from Austrian club Wolfsberger in January. Signed for around €6 million, the 23-year-old wasted little time establishing himself as a key figure in the heart of the defence, making 21 appearances in all competitions while contributing three goals and an assist.
His impressive performances also played a vital role in Trabzonspor’s Turkish Cup triumph, helping the club secure its first domestic cup title in five years.
Although Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima remains Crystal Palace’s preferred option, Nwaiwu has emerged as a strong alternative should the South London club fail to reach an agreement for the Frenchman.
However, Palace are not alone in the race. Fellow Premier League side Fulham are also monitoring the Super Eagles defender and have reportedly made progress in talks with the player. Trabzonspor, meanwhile, are determined to keep hold of one of their standout performers and are believed to value him at no less than €30 million.
Nwaiwu’s rapid development has also been recognised at international level. After earning his maiden senior call-up earlier this year, he has become an increasingly important member of Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad, further enhancing his reputation with composed displays in Nigeria’s recent outings.
With interest from multiple Premier League clubs continuing to grow, the coming weeks could prove pivotal for Nwaiwu, whose stock has risen considerably following an outstanding first six months in Turkish football.
