Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi is closing in on a move to Premier League newcomers Coventry City after the club reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for his permanent transfer, Trybal News reports.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have reached a full agreement, with Awoniyi now undergoing his medical ahead of completing the move and being officially unveiled as a Coventry player.

The transfer will bring an end to the striker’s four-year spell at Nottingham Forest, where he established himself as a proven Premier League forward despite experiencing periods of injury.

Awoniyi joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 after previously coming through Liverpool’s ranks. He went on to make 103 appearances for the City Ground club across all competitions, scoring 23 goals and providing six assists.

The 28-year-old scored 21 of those goals in the Premier League, making 90 appearances in England’s top flight and gaining valuable experience ahead of Coventry’s return to the division.

Awoniyi will become the second Nigerian international to join Frank Lampard’s Coventry squad since the club secured promotion to the Premier League. He will link up with compatriot Frank Onyeka, who joined the Sky Blues from Brentford at the end of last season.

The move represents another significant addition to Lampard’s squad as Coventry prepare for life back in the Premier League, while Awoniyi will be looking to revive his goalscoring form and establish himself as a key figure in his new side.

The striker entered the final year of his Nottingham Forest contract, paving the way for the permanent transfer as Coventry move to secure his services ahead of the new campaign.
