Taiwo Awoniyi marked his first start for Coventry City with a goal and an assist as the Sky Blues defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, Trybal News reports.
The Nigeria international, who made his Coventry debut as a substitute in the club’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal, was handed his first start at Home Park and made an immediate impact.
Awoniyi opened the scoring after just three minutes, finishing from inside the box to give Coventry an early lead.

The 29-year-old quickly added an assist to his contribution, setting up Jack Rudoni two minutes later as the midfielder doubled Coventry’s advantage with a composed finish. Awoniyi finished the game with two shots, nine passes with eight completed, 15 touches and two ground duels, winning one.
Plymouth reduced the deficit in the 21st minute through Oliver Irow, before substitute Xavier Amaechi completed the hosts’ comeback nine minutes after the restart to make it 2-2.
Coventry regained the lead in the 67th minute when Ephron Mason-Clark struck five minutes after coming off the bench. Victor Torp subsequently converted from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to secure a 4-2 victory.
Awoniyi was substituted with approximately 20 minutes remaining, with fellow new signing Sidiki Cherif replacing him.
The performance provides an encouraging start to Awoniyi’s time at Coventry following his arrival during the summer transfer window. The former Union Berlin striker will now hope to build on his display as Coventry prepare to return to Premier League action.
The Sky Blues host fellow newly promoted side Hull City on Saturday, with the club looking to respond to their opening-day defeat against Arsenal.
Coventry’s victory over Plymouth secures their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup, while Awoniyi’s contribution will strengthen his case for further involvement in the Premier League.
