Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi played a starring role as Hull City marked their return to the Premier League with a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United, Trybal News reports.

The 32-year-old centre-back opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest after Oli McBurnie’s effort was saved to put Hull City ahead.

The goal was historic for the Tigers, ending a wait of more than nine years for a Premier League goal. Hull’s previous goal in the competition came on May 21, 2017, when Sam Clucas scored in a 7-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Hull were relegated at the end of that season and had spent the intervening years outside England’s top flight.

Ajayi’s goal also ended his own Premier League scoring drought. His previous goal in the competition came in January 2021 for West Bromwich Albion against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ajayi delivers at both ends

The Nigerian international was equally impressive defensively, helping Hull frustrate a Manchester United side that struggled to break through the home team’s defensive organisation.

Ajayi recorded seven defensive contributions, including two interceptions and five clearances. He won both of his aerial duels and also won his only ground duel.

He was composed in possession as well, completing 14 of his 16 passes, while recording 27 touches during his appearance.

Ajayi’s afternoon ended in the 64th minute when he was substituted, having already played a key role in Hull’s defensive effort and helping the Tigers protect their advantage.

Hull punish United

Hull doubled their lead before the break when Nobel Mendy added a second goal, putting the newly promoted side firmly in control at half-time.

Manchester United attempted to respond after the interval but could not find a breakthrough, with Hull maintaining their shape and defending their two-goal advantage effectively.

The result represents a dream start to Hull City’s return to the Premier League and a major statement against one of English football’s most decorated clubs.

For Ajayi, it was an afternoon of personal and collective achievement, a historic goal, a strong defensive performance and a clean sheet as Hull City announced their return to the Premier League in spectacular fashion.

The victory will also provide a significant boost to Ajayi’s confidence as he continues to compete for a place in Nigeria’s plans, with the experienced defender showing that he can still make an impact at the highest level of English football.
