Paraguay produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Germany 4-3 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time in the Round of 32 in Massachusetts.
Goalkeeper Orlando Gill delivered a sensational performance with a string of crucial saves during the match before becoming the hero in the shootout, securing Paraguay’s place in the last 16 and arguably the greatest victory in the nation’s World Cup history.
The third knockout match of the tournament paired Group E winners Germany against Paraguay, who reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams from Group D. Germany entered their first World Cup knockout match since lifting the trophy in 2014, while Paraguay looked to continue their remarkable run.
Paraguay threatened almost immediately. In the second minute, Julio Enciso curled in a corner that dropped kindly for Alonso at the far post. His awkward first touch still allowed him to get a shot away, but Manuel Neuer reacted brilliantly to keep Germany level.
Germany responded four minutes later after Musiala burst into the box before cutting the ball back for Deniz Undav. The striker attempted an ambitious lob, but his effort drifted high and wide as Paraguay survived the early pressure.
Although Germany dominated possession, Paraguay stayed disciplined defensively. Rather than sitting with five defenders, Gustavo Alfaro’s side maintained a compact 4-4-2 shape and occasionally shifted into a 4-3-3 when looking to break. Their organisation frustrated Julian Nagelsmann’s side, who struggled to find space between the lines despite controlling the ball.
Germany continued to probe before the break. In the 41st minute, Florian Wirtz combined cleverly from a short corner, but Juan Caceres intercepted the danger before a German handball halted another promising move.
Just one minute later, Paraguay stunned the four-time world champions. After Neuer punched away Miguel Almiron’s corner, Caceres produced a superb sliding challenge to keep the attack alive. Almiron and Galarza combined brilliantly before the cross found Enciso, who timed his run perfectly and nodded beyond Neuer to give Paraguay a 1-0 lead completely against the run of play.
The goal carried extra significance for Enciso. He became directly involved in his third goal of the 2026 World Cup, with one goal and two assists, matching the best tally by a Paraguayan player at a World Cup since 1966 alongside Roberto Cabanas in 1986 and Francisco Arce in 2002.
Germany pushed hard for an immediate response before half-time. Nmecha almost found the equaliser in stoppage time, but Canale produced an important deflection to send the effort behind.
At the interval, Paraguay led 1-0 despite relentless German pressure. Germany had dominated possession and delivered 17 crosses during the opening 45 minutes, yet Paraguay defended resolutely and punished their opponents with ruthless efficiency.
Germany nearly gifted Paraguay another goal five minutes into the second half. Joshua Kimmich misplaced a pass straight to Enciso, but Neuer rushed off his line to deny the forward with an excellent save.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 54th minute. Wirtz cut inside onto his right foot and produced a magnificent cross into the penalty area, where Kai Havertz glanced a clever header into the bottom-right corner to level the score at 1-1. It was Wirtz’s third assist of the tournament and exactly the response Germany needed.

Germany continued to pile on the pressure. In the 78th minute, Havertz met another dangerous cross with a powerful header, but Gill made an outstanding save at his near post to keep Paraguay alive.
Paraguay still carried a threat on the counter. Caballero nearly broke clear late in normal time before Antonio Rudiger recovered well, while Almiron’s long-range effort deep into stoppage time earned a dangerous corner that Germany eventually survived.
Extra time followed with Germany dominating almost every attack. However, Gill continued to frustrate the favourites. The biggest moment came when Jonathan Tah powered home a header from a Brown corner, only for VAR to intervene. After reviewing the incident, the officials ruled that Anton had illegally blocked Gill inside the six-yard box, and the goal was disallowed.
Germany kept pressing. Woltemade saw a close-range effort blocked before Wirtz delivered another dangerous cross that Tah narrowly failed to reach. Gill then produced another superb save from Havertz’s looping header late in the first period of extra time as Paraguay somehow held firm.
The second period brought more German attacks, but Paraguay refused to buckle. Gill confidently claimed another dangerous free-kick after Musiala won a foul, while Germany’s frustration became increasingly obvious as the match drifted towards penalties.
The shootout delivered even more drama. Gill immediately denied Havertz with an excellent save before Mauricio confidently converted Paraguay’s opening penalty. Gomez then scored to restore Paraguay’s advantage after Germany responded through Kimmich.
Musiala squeezed his penalty past Gill to level again, but Galarza calmly restored Paraguay’s lead with another composed finish. Gill then produced the decisive moment by diving brilliantly to save Woltemade’s penalty, leaving Paraguay one kick from qualification.
Sanabria unexpectedly missed the chance to win it by dragging his effort wide, while Amiri kept Germany alive with a composed finish. Neuer then saved Balbuena’s penalty to give Germany fresh hope.
However, the drama continued as Tah blazed Germany’s next penalty over the crossbar. That miss handed José Canale the opportunity to seal a famous victory, and he made no mistake by sending Neuer the wrong way before firing high into the net to spark unforgettable celebrations among the Paraguayan players and supporters.
Paraguay completed a stunning 4-3 penalty shootout victory after the 1-1 draw to eliminate Germany and reach the World Cup last 16. Orlando Gill emerged as the undisputed hero after producing a series of world-class saves throughout the match and in the shootout. Germany created the better chances and controlled large periods of the contest, but their wastefulness proved costly as Paraguay secured one of the greatest results in their football history.
