The National Sports Commission (NSC) has charged Nigeria’s athletics team to deliver outstanding performances at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, NSC official Hon. Olopade emphasized the need for discipline, unity, and determination, describing the competition as a vital opportunity for Nigeria to reaffirm its status on the global athletics stage.
The entire nation stands firmly behind you. We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud,” he said.
Olopade also revealed that he will be present in Gaborone to personally support the team, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to the growth and success of Nigerian sports. He urged the athletes to target podium finishes while also securing qualification spots for future international championships.
A total of 24 athletes will represent Nigeria at the event, with the NSC assuring them of full institutional backing, alongside the support of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
Team Nigeria departed on Monday aboard Ethiopian Airlines, while some foreign-based athletes are expected to link up with the squad directly in Botswana.
The team, comprising a mix of seasoned performers and rising talents, will compete in all six relay events at the championship scheduled for May 2–3, 2026.
This year’s World Athletics Relays 2026 holds added importance, serving as a qualification pathway to the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
