The 33-year-old heads into the Games as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished athletes, having won the African title and the 2019 African Games gold medal. He is also the reigning National Sports Festival champion.

Announcing the appointments, NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the Commission selected both athletes in recognition of their achievements, leadership qualities and commitment to Nigerian sports.

According to Olopade, the appointments align with the Commission’s vision of fostering mentorship among elite athletes while inspiring the next generation to pursue excellence.

We have chosen individuals who not only have outstanding records in their respective sports but have also demonstrated exemplary leadership, integrity and unwavering commitment to representing Nigeria throughout their careers,” he said.

He added that the captaincy roles are also a mark of appreciation for their contributions to the country’s sporting success.

The decision to entrust them with leading Team Nigeria to the Commonwealth Games reflects our appreciation for their sacrifices and dedication to elevating Nigeria’s image on the global stage. We want them to know that their efforts are valued and that their service to the nation will continue to be recognised under the Renewed Hope Agenda for Sports of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Team Nigeria is scheduled to depart for Scotland on July 2 for a three-week pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen ahead of the Commonwealth Games, which begin on July 23 in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, members of Team Nigeria are expected to receive their official Puma competition and ceremonial kits, which the National Sports Commission will unveil on July 1 before the team’s departure.
