Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team produced a brilliant performance to win gold at the ongoing 2026 Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, Trybal News reports.

The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George combined strongly to secure victory in the event with a winning time of 3:16.41.

The impressive display earned Nigeria its second gold medal of the championships and further boosted the country’s growing medal tally in Accra.

Veteran quarter-miler Patience Okon-George anchored the team to victory with a composed final leg performance. She had earlier played a key role in helping Nigeria qualify for next year’s World Championships in the mixed 4x400m relay during the 2026 Debswana World Athletics Relays held a few weeks ago.

The latest success added to Nigeria’s strong outing at the championships, which already includes gold for Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles, silver in the women’s hammer throw, as well as bronze medals in the men’s 100m and women’s discus events.

Following the relay triumph, Nigeria’s overall medal count after Day Two now stands at two gold, three silver and three bronze medals, bringing the total to eight medals.

Competition is set to continue on Thursday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium with several key events lined up. Morning action will feature the heptathlon events, while the evening session will include finals in the men’s and women’s 400m, 800m, 400m hurdles, 3000m steeplechase, long jump and high jump.

Relay heats in the men’s and women’s 4x100m are also expected to conclude the day’s programme.
