Nigeria’s boxing team is set to take on Ghana in an international friendly as part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The bilateral tournament will take place on Thursday, May 7, at the Accra Sports Stadium. The event is designed to assess the readiness of both nations’ athletes ahead of the Games.

In line with Commonwealth Games standards, the competition will feature seven male boxers across the official weight categories. The female category will include three Nigerian boxers competing in the 54kg, 57kg, and 71kg divisions.

The Nigerian contingent is scheduled to depart for Accra on Tuesday, giving the team two days to finalize preparations before the bouts.

Chairman of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) Technical Committee, Babatunde Laguda, described the friendly as a crucial step in evaluating the athletes.

The Ghana friendly tournament is the right step at this time. Our boxers are currently in camp in Lagos, and this international exposure will place them in a more competitive environment,” Laguda said.

NBF Vice President, Omonlei Imadu, also revealed plans for additional preparatory matches.

We are in the final stages of discussions with two other nations for more friendly bouts. Our goal is to ensure our boxers receive the best possible preparation ahead of the Games in July,” Imadu stated.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
