Nigeria is aiming for a historic performance at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with officials expressing confidence that Team Nigeria can surpass previous achievements and set a new national benchmark.

The ambitious target comes amid renewed optimism within the country’s sports system, driven by improved planning, athlete preparation, and administrative reforms.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, revealed that Nigeria could exceed its initial medal projections under the Elite Athletes Podium Finish initiative.

Although the Elite Athletes Podium Finish team is looking at 18 gold medals, I think we will push beyond that to 22,” Olopade said.

The statement reflects growing belief that the country’s blend of experienced competitors and emerging talents can deliver across multiple sporting events.

Olopade attributed the rising confidence to structural changes introduced within the sports sector under the leadership of Shehu Dikko, alongside the backing of President Bola Tinubu.

We have broken many barriers,” he added.

Preparations for the Games have reportedly been more coordinated than in previous years, with early camping programmes, improved funding, timely payment of athlete allowances, and better access to training facilities forming part of the build-up.

Nigeria’s confidence is also rooted in its impressive outing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where the country recorded its most successful campaign with 35 medals, 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze to finish seventh overall.

A standout feature of that performance was the dominance of female athletes, who secured all 12 gold medals, highlighting the country’s growing strength in women’s sports.

Historically, Nigeria has maintained a strong presence at the Commonwealth Games, consistently winning medals since its debut and building a reputation as one of Africa’s top-performing nations at the event.

With the Glasgow Games approaching, expectations within Team Nigeria continue to rise. Officials remain confident that enhanced preparation, improved athlete welfare, and stronger institutional support will translate into a record-breaking medal haul and further cement Nigeria’s status on the global sporting stage.
