Nigeria is intensifying preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games as the countdown to Africa’s first Olympic sporting event enters its final month, Trybal News reports.
The Games are scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026, in Senegal, with approximately 2,700 athletes aged 17 and under expected to participate.
Nigeria’s Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the Games provide an important platform to identify, nurture and expose the country’s emerging sporting talents to international competition.
“The Games present another opportunity to identify, nurture and expose the next generation of sporting stars,” Olopade said, stressing the Commission’s focus on developing a sustainable pathway for young Nigerian athletes.
The Dakar 2026 programme will feature 25 competitive sports and 10 additional engagement sports, offering young athletes opportunities to compete while promoting broader participation and interaction.
Competition will take place across three host zones in Senegal: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. Athletes and officials from around the world are expected to converge on the country for two weeks of youth sporting action.
With just 30 days to the opening ceremony, attention is now turning to the young Nigerians who will represent the country in Dakar and gain valuable experience on the international stage.
Olopade said the Commission is committed to ensuring Nigeria’s participation in major youth competitions contributes to a stronger pipeline of athletes capable of competing at future Olympic and global sporting events.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will make history as the first Olympic sporting event to be hosted on African soil.
