Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay team has booked its place at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China after delivering a record-breaking performance at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone.
The team, Favour Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson produced a superb run, stopping the clock at 40.24 seconds to place fourth in their heat.

Although they narrowly missed out on a podium finish, the time set a new African benchmark in the mixed 4x100m relay, highlighting Nigeria’s steady rise in the event internationally.
The race proved historic, with Canada storming to victory in a world-record time of 40.07 seconds. Germany followed in 40.15 seconds, while the Netherlands edged into third place with 40.20 seconds, leaving Nigeria just fractions behind the medal positions.
Crucially, Nigeria’s performance was enough to secure qualification for the 2027 global championships, extending an impressive run for Team Nigeria in Gaborone and reaffirming their status as a dominant force in African relay athletics.
