Switzerland secured top spot in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a deserved 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada in Vancouver, with Johan Manzambi delivering a match winning performance by scoring one goal and providing an assist.

The result ensured the Swiss finished above Canada in the group standings and advanced to the knockout stage as group winners. Canada also progressed to the Round of 32, although they missed out on the advantage of finishing first.

The match marked the first World Cup meeting between the two nations. Their only previous encounter came in a friendly in 2002, when Canada recorded a 3-1 victory in Switzerland.

Before kick off, attention turned to injured Canada midfielder Ismael Kone, who watched from the bench after suffering a serious injury against Qatar last week. His presence drew applause from supporters, while teammate Assim Madibo continued serving a five match suspension following the challenge that caused the injury.

Switzerland created the first major opportunity of the game in the 11th minute. Breel Embolo broke through on goal and looked set to score, but Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau stood tall and produced an excellent save. The rebound fell kindly to Johan Manzambi, whose follow up effort was blocked by Derek Cornelius before it could cross the line.

The Swiss continued to threaten six minutes later. Manzambi burst down the right flank before finding Embolo, whose powerful low effort forced another sharp save from Crepeau.

Canada gradually grew into the contest and produced their best attacking moments late in the first half. Cyle Larin tested Gregor Kobel with a powerful run and shot in the 33rd minute, forcing the Swiss goalkeeper into his first meaningful save of the evening. Moments later, Ruben Vargas threatened at the other end but fired straight at Crepeau.

The hosts came close again in the 39th minute when Larin picked out Ali Ahmed at the far post. However, the winger failed to trouble Kobel with a tame finish.

Despite an entertaining first half filled with chances at both ends, neither side managed to break the deadlock before the interval.

Switzerland wasted no time after the restart.

Just 40 seconds into the second half, the Swiss found the breakthrough. Johan Manzambi delivered a dangerous cross from the right that evaded both Embolo and two Canadian defenders. The ball dropped perfectly for Ruben Vargas, who calmly took a touch before smashing his finish beyond Crepeau to make it 1-0.

The goal transformed the momentum of the match, and Switzerland continued to dominate possession and territory.

Their pressure paid off again in the 57th minute. Embolo drove into the penalty area before Canada defender Alistair Johnston lost his footing at a crucial moment. The Swiss striker quickly squared the ball to Manzambi, who hammered a first time effort through the hands of Crepeau and into the net.

The goal capped a superb display from Manzambi and gave Switzerland a commanding 2-0 lead.

The strike also created a piece of World Cup history. Vargas and Manzambi became the first pair of Swiss teammates to score in consecutive World Cup matches since Robert Ballaman and Josef Hügi achieved the feat in 1954.

By the hour mark, Switzerland were firmly in control. Canada struggled to create meaningful openings, while the atmosphere inside BC Place grew noticeably quieter apart from the vocal Swiss supporters.

However, the hosts refused to give up.

Following a hydration break in the 76th minute, substitute Promise David made an immediate impact. Saliba produced a moment of brilliance with a superb first touch before setting up David, who volleyed home an outstanding finish to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and reignite Canadian hopes.

The goal sparked a late surge from the co-hosts as they pushed desperately for an equaliser.

Canada nearly found it in stoppage time. In the second minute of added time, Derek Cornelius met a dangerous cross from Johnston but could not direct his header on target despite making slight contact.

Two minutes later, Promise David flicked on another long throw into the penalty area, but Kobel remained alert and gathered comfortably.

The final opportunity arrived moments later when Johnston rose highest to meet a cross from the left. The defender had space on either side of the goalkeeper but headed straight at Kobel, allowing the Swiss shot stopper to make a routine save.

That proved to be Canada’s last chance as Switzerland held firm to secure all three points.

At the final whistle, the Swiss players celebrated a victory that guaranteed top spot in Group B and confirmed their status as one of the tournament’s most impressive teams so far.

Canada threw everything forward in the closing stages but could not complete the comeback. While the co-hosts still advance to the knockout rounds, they will now have to settle for second place in the group.

Ultimately, Johan Manzambi stole the show with a goal and an assist as Switzerland produced another composed display to claim a 2-1 win and head into the last 32 with momentum firmly on their side.
