Kun Khalifat FC could have new owners before the start of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League season after the club’s shareholders confirmed they are in the process of selling a majority stake to a prospective buyer.

The Owerri-based club has formally notified the Nigeria Premier Football League of the planned ownership change, opening the door for a new investor to take control of the top-flight side ahead of the new campaign.

In a letter addressed to the league, Kun Khalifat FC president Amaefula Michael confirmed that negotiations are ongoing and asked the NPFL to begin the ownership transfer process.

“On behalf of the shareholders of Kun Khalifat of Owerri, I hereby confirm that we are in the process of handing over the majority shares of the company to a prospective buyer.

“You will be duly informed when the process is concluded. Meanwhile we appeal to you to commence the process of transfer of ownership to the prospective buyer,” Amaefula wrote.

However, the proposed takeover comes with a key condition. If the ownership transfer is not completed before the new NPFL season begins, league regulations may prevent the incoming owners from changing the club’s name during the campaign.

The development follows the club’s unveiling of its technical crew and management team on Tuesday, August 3, ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

Obinna Uzoho retained his position as Kun Khalifat Technical Adviser, while Chinedu Okonkwo will continue as Chief Coach. Patrick Ukaegbu was named Assistant Coach, with Esinaulo Moses serving as Trainer.

Mere Michael Ozoemena will work as Goalkeeper Trainer, while Gerald Akakem takes over the role of Assistant Coach II.

The club also reshuffled its management structure. Former General Manager Charles “Tigana” Nnadi left his position, with Alhaji J.O. Rabiu appointed as the new General Manager.

Kun Khalifat also scrapped the Sporting Director position, previously held by former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Anaemena before his resignation at the end of the 2025/2026 season. The club has replaced the role with that of Team Manager, with Cole Oluwayemisi taking the position.

Opurum Humphrey was unveiled as Club Secretary, while Opara Lawrence will serve as Assistant Kit Manager.

Esther Obinna takes over as Welfare Officer, while Godwin Saviola remains Media Officer and will now work alongside Ofodile David Chibuzor, who joins as Media Officer I.

The club also confirmed David Innocent and Okenwa Tonika Chinemerem as Nurses I and II respectively. Chioma Francisca Agbasi was appointed as the club’s doctor, while Victor Chibuzor will serve as Chief Security Officer for the 2026/2027 season.

With the new NPFL campaign fast approaching, attention has now shifted to whether the ownership transition will be completed in time and what impact it could have on the club’s future.
