The Ghana Football Association has dismissed head coach Otto Addo following the Black Stars’ 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly, just over 70 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana suffered the narrow loss in Stuttgart on Monday, with Deniz Undav scoring a late winner to seal victory for the hosts. The result compounded a poor run of form for the Black Stars, who have now lost four consecutive matches, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in their previous outing.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the GFA confirmed Addo’s immediate departure from the role.
The association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours,” the statement read.
The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”
Addo, 50, was appointed in March 2024 and had been tasked with rebuilding the national team ahead of the World Cup. However, a string of disappointing performances and results ultimately led to the federation’s decision to make a change at a critical stage of preparations.
Ghana are set to compete at the World Cup in North America later this year, where they have been drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
With time running out before the tournament, attention will now turn to the GFA’s next move as they look to appoint a new coach capable of turning around the team’s fortunes and guiding the Black Stars through a difficult group stage.
