Gaborone has officially introduced the medals for the 2026 World Athletics Relays, offering a design that blends prestige with national symbolism ahead of the May 2–3 competition.
The newly unveiled medals are crafted to highlight Botswana’s rich heritage, featuring locally sourced diamonds to mark the country’s 60th independence anniversary. At the heart of each piece are 120 diamonds mined within Botswana, a nod to the nation’s global reputation as a powerhouse in diamond production.
Beyond their sparkle, the medals carry deeper cultural meaning. Their design incorporates iconic elements such as the Mohembo Bridge, alongside artistic patterns inspired by elephant tusks and zebra stripes, symbols closely tied to Botswana’s wildlife and identity.
Organisers describe the unveiling as a major step in the countdown to the championship, with the medals intended not just as awards, but as meaningful keepsakes that reflect the spirit and story of the host nation.
