Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal early in the first half as Colombia secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over Ghana on a sweltering night at Arrowhead Stadium, booking their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The win sends Los Cafeteros into a last 16 meeting with Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
It was only Colombia’s second World Cup knockout stage victory and their first since the 2014 tournament in Brazil, where they reached the quarterfinals.
The match made unwanted World Cup history inside the opening minutes. Both teams were forced into early substitutions after Colombia striker Jhon Córdoba and Ghana defender Marvin Senaya picked up injuries. It marked the first World Cup match on record in which both sides had made injury enforced changes before the 15th minute.
Despite the disruption, Colombia quickly found their rhythm and broke the deadlock soon after. Córdoba’s replacement, Luis Suárez, made an instant impact by curling a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Jhon Arias escaped his marker and guided a composed finish beyond Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi to put Colombia ahead.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute after Daniel Muñoz released Suárez down the right flank. The striker delivered a precise ball across the face of goal, where Arias arrived unmarked to flick home and give Los Cafeteros a deserved 1-0 lead.
Speaking after the match, Colombia coach Néstor Lorenzo revealed that Córdoba had “felt a pull” and will undergo further medical tests to determine the extent of the injury.
Colombia continued to dominate after the break and thought they had doubled their advantage in the 56th minute when Luis Díaz found the back of the net. However, the assistant referee quickly ruled the goal out for offside. Minutes later, Díaz was denied again when Ati Zigi produced an excellent point blank save.
The Ghana goalkeeper delivered an outstanding performance throughout the night, finishing with seven saves to keep his side in the contest until the final whistle.
However, Ghana struggled to threaten at the other end. They failed to register a single shot on target as Colombia recorded a third consecutive clean sheet at the tournament with another disciplined defensive display.
Veteran playmaker James Rodríguez also reached a major milestone. The 34 year old made his 10th World Cup start, drawing level with Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincón for the most starts by a Colombian player in the competition.
Rodríguez was substituted at half time, with Lorenzo explaining the decision after the match.
“There were several players who had flu-like symptoms, and we were anticipating that they might have greater fatigue,” Lorenzo said. “But it was a tactical substitution at that moment.”
The demanding weather also played a major role. Kick off temperatures reached 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31.1 Celsius), while the heat index climbed to 96 despite the late evening start. Hydration breaks proved essential as players from both teams battled dehydration and muscle cramps throughout the match.
Colombia entered the knockout stage in impressive form after conceding just one goal during the group phase. They recorded victories over Uzbekistan and DR Congo before earning a draw against Portugal, performances that have established them as one of the tournament’s standout teams.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente even described Colombia as “a candidate to win the World Cup” following their strong start to the competition.
Despite the growing praise, Luis Díaz insisted the squad remains fully focused.
“We have won absolutely nothing,” Díaz said. “These games are very difficult. Every game we’ve seen has been tight. The good thing and the positive thing is that we’re playing very well, we feel comfortable, we are being a family, we are working as a team, and that will work for what is coming.”
Colombia’s supporters have every reason to believe. With another composed performance, another clean sheet and a place in the Round of 16 secured, Los Cafeteros now turn their attention to Switzerland as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
