Qatar secured the first FIFA World Cup point in their history after captain Boualem Khoukhi scored a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in a Group B clash at Levi’s Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The result marked a historic milestone for Qatar in only their second World Cup appearance. After suffering three defeats as hosts in 2022, the Gulf nation finally celebrated its first point on football’s biggest stage thanks to Khoukhi’s late intervention.

Switzerland entered the contest as favourites and almost made the perfect start. In the opening minutes, Edmílson Junior capitalised on a mistake from Manuel Akanji and raced through on goal, but he could only shoot straight at Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The Swiss responded immediately in the sixth minute when Dan Ndoye latched onto a precise through ball from Michel Aebischer. However, Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada reacted sharply to make an excellent low save.

Ndoye then squandered a golden opportunity four minutes later. Switzerland worked the ball brilliantly down the left flank before Ricardo Rodríguez delivered a low cross into the striker’s path. With the goal at his mercy, Ndoye somehow fired over the crossbar from close range.

Switzerland’s pressure eventually paid off in the 13th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Breel Embolo flicked a header into the path of Remo Freuler, who reached the ball before being brought down by Abunada inside the penalty area.

After a brief VAR review, the decision stood and Embolo stepped forward in the 17th minute. The striker calmly converted from the spot to give Switzerland a deserved 1-0 lead and register his 25th international goal.

The goal continued a trend that has often worked in Switzerland’s favour. Before this match, they had avoided defeat in their previous nine World Cup games when scoring first, a run stretching back to 1966.

Switzerland continued to dominate after taking the lead. In the 21st minute, Embolo slipped Denis Zakaria through on goal, but Abunada once again stood tall to deny the midfielder with a crucial save.

Despite spending much of the half under pressure, Qatar remained dangerous on the counterattack. Edmílson Junior nearly found an equaliser in the 43rd minute when he connected with a through pass and struck first time, only for Kobel to block with his legs.

Abunada produced another impressive stop just before halftime. Ndoye ran onto a perfectly weighted pass from Aebischer and unleashed a powerful effort, but the Qatar goalkeeper pushed it away to keep his side in the game.

At the break, Switzerland had registered 14 shots, seven of them on target, but Embolo’s penalty remained the only goal separating the two teams.

The Swiss resumed their dominance after halftime. Granit Xhaka came close in the 50th minute with one of his trademark long range strikes. The midfielder’s powerful effort flew narrowly over the crossbar, although replays showed Abunada had managed to get fingertips to the ball.

As the match entered its closing stages, Switzerland continued to create opportunities. In the 77th minute, Ruben Vargas broke into the penalty area but fired straight at Abunada. Moments later, Embolo found space in a similar position, only to see his shot roll into the side netting.

The striker wasted another opportunity in the 85th minute. After running onto a through ball, Embolo appeared set to seal the victory but lost control of the ball, allowing Abunada to gather comfortably.

Qatar struggled to threaten for long periods but almost found a breakthrough in the 90th minute. Ahmed Alaa created space on the edge of the box but dragged his effort wide enough for Kobel to collect with ease.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Five minutes into stoppage time, Qatar launched one final attack. A superb cross arrived from the left flank and captain Boualem Khoukhi surged forward from defence to meet it. Rising above his marker, he powered a header beyond Kobel and into the net.

The Qatar players immediately celebrated in disbelief as the stadium erupted. Khoukhi’s timing, movement and determination proved decisive as he guided the ball into the far corner with the goalkeeper left helpless.

The goal punished Switzerland for failing to convert their numerous chances and completed an extraordinary late comeback.

Switzerland had controlled most of the contest after Embolo’s penalty and looked on course for all three points. However, Qatar gradually improved in the latter stages and finally found their reward through their captain’s dramatic intervention.

The equaliser was especially significant as it became Qatar’s second goal in FIFA World Cup history and secured their first ever point at the tournament.

The draw leaves Group B perfectly balanced, with all four teams sitting on one point following Canada’s 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier in the group.

The match also carried several historical notes. Switzerland fielded the oldest starting lineup in their World Cup history with an average age of 30 years and 86 days, surpassing their previous record set against Brazil in 1950.

This was also the first World Cup meeting between Qatar and Switzerland. Their only previous encounter came in a friendly in Lugano in November 2018, when Qatar claimed a 1-0 victory courtesy of an Akram Afif goal.

For Qatar, the tournament represents a different journey from their debut in 2022. Unlike their previous appearance as hosts, they earned qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the qualifying campaign, drawing 0-0 with Oman before defeating the United Arab Emirates 2-1 to secure their place.

Thanks to Khoukhi’s unforgettable late header, Qatar now have a piece of World Cup history of their own and renewed hope of making an impact in Group B.
