Australia booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after playing out a tense 0-0 draw against Paraguay at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The result secured second place in Group D for the Socceroos, while Paraguay boosted their hopes of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
With the final round of Group D fixtures taking place simultaneously, plenty rested on the outcome. A draw would send Australia through as runners-up and leave Paraguay in third place with four points, giving them a strong chance of reaching the knockout stage. A victory for either side would have guaranteed second place, while defeat would have left the losing team nervously waiting on results from other groups. The stakes could hardly have been higher.
Australia entered the match with one win and one defeat from their opening two games. Tony Popovic’s side opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Türkiye before suffering a 2-0 loss to the United States. Paraguay also held a 50 percent record after a heavy 4-1 defeat to the USA before bouncing back with an impressive 1-0 win over Türkiye despite playing much of the game with 10 men.
The meeting marked the first FIFA World Cup clash between Australia and Paraguay. Their previous five encounters had all been international friendlies played in Australia, producing two wins for the Socceroos and three draws. Current Australia head coach Tony Popovic featured in three of those matches.
Australia created the first clear opportunity in the fourth minute. Jordy Bos played Volpato into space on the right before the winger cut the ball back for Jackson Irvine. His powerful effort looked destined for the corner, but Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced an excellent save at his near post to keep the scores level.
Paraguay remained patient for much of the first half. They absorbed Australia’s pressure and looked content to wait for opportunities on the counterattack rather than commit too many players forward.
Australia continued to threaten as the half progressed. In the 35th minute, Bos cut inside onto his stronger left foot and unleashed a long-range strike. Although the effort travelled straight at Gill, the goalkeeper gathered the ball safely despite an awkward bounce.
The Socceroos came even closer in first-half stoppage time. Volpato again caused problems down the right before cutting inside and firing towards goal. Gill reacted superbly, diving to his right to make a strong one-handed save and preserve the deadlock.
The teams went into the break level after a cagey but competitive opening 45 minutes. Australia controlled possession and created the better opportunities, with Irvine, Bos and Volpato all forcing saves from Gill. Paraguay, meanwhile, remained disciplined defensively and looked comfortable with the draw, knowing the result would put them in a strong position to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Paraguay started the second half with greater attacking intent. Five minutes after the restart, Mauricio broke through the middle and tried his luck from distance, but his effort lacked power and Australia goalkeeper Thomas Beach collected comfortably.
As the game entered its closing stages, Paraguay increasingly relied on direct balls over the top in an attempt to catch Australia’s defence out. However, the Socceroos stayed organised and dealt comfortably with every attack.
Paraguay nearly found a late breakthrough in the 82nd minute. Julio Enciso worked hard to create space on the edge of the penalty area before dragging his low effort narrowly wide of the left post.
Neither side managed to find the decisive goal, and the final whistle confirmed a result that suited both teams. Australia progressed to the Round of 32 as Group D runners-up, while Paraguay finished third with four points.
Paraguay must now wait for the remaining group results to discover whether their tally is enough to secure one of the tournament’s best third-placed qualification spots. With four points already on the board, they remain well placed to continue their FIFA World Cup journey.
