Austria and Algeria secured their places in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after an unforgettable 3-3 draw at Kansas City Stadium, with a dramatic stoppage time equaliser ensuring both nations progressed from Group J.

The result capped a thrilling contest filled with twists, late drama and six goals. Austria finished second in the group and will face Spain in the Round of 32, while Algeria advanced to set up a knockout clash with Switzerland.

Austria knew qualification would mark their first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage since finishing third in 1954. Algeria also had plenty at stake as they chased only their second World Cup victory over European opposition after famously defeating West Germany in 1982.

The opening stages were tense, with both sides aware that a draw would send them through. Despite the cautious approach, Austria eventually found the breakthrough in the 28th minute through Marko Arnautovic. David Alaba launched a superb long pass from deep, allowing the veteran striker to time his run perfectly before calmly slotting the ball past Oussama Benbot. The assist was Alaba’s first of the tournament, while Arnautovic celebrated his 49th international goal.

Algeria almost responded before the break when Fares Chaibi unleashed a fierce strike from the edge of the area that crashed against the right post.

Their persistence finally paid off in first half stoppage time with a brilliant individual effort from Rafik Belghali. A long ball bounced awkwardly off the corner flag, catching Philipp Mwene and Riyad Mahrez off guard. Belghali reacted quickest, surged down the right, skipped past two defenders and smashed an unstoppable finish beyond Alexander Schlager to level the score at 1-1.

Austria restored their advantage 10 minutes into the second half with a devastating counterattack. Konrad Laimer delivered a superb low cross from the right and Marcel Sabitzer arrived unmarked on the edge of the box to fire a precise first time finish into the corner for his 27th international goal.

Algeria refused to give in and hit back just five minutes later. Houssem Aouar produced a brilliant run down the left before driving a dangerous pass across the face of goal. Mahrez arrived at the far post and finished confidently to make it 2-2 with his 39th international goal.

The drama reached another level deep into stoppage time. In the third minute of added time, Algeria appeared to have snatched all three points. After a long spell of patient possession, Aouar slipped Mahrez through inside the area and the former Premier League star calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner to put Algeria ahead 3-2.

Austria refused to accept defeat and produced one final response. Three minutes later, a towering substitute made an instant impact with his very first touch. Michael Gregoritsch floated an excellent cross into the box and the 6 ft 7 striker powered a header beyond Benbot to make it 3-3, sparking wild celebrations. Gregoritsch also registered his first assist of the tournament as Austria rescued both a point and qualification.

The remarkable finale confirmed both teams’ places in the knockout stage exactly as the evening had begun. Austria claimed second place in Group J and now prepare to face Spain, while Algeria continue their impressive campaign with a last 32 meeting against Switzerland.
