Alvaro Arbeloa began his Premier League career with a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Monday, with the Fulham manager admitting that his team made costly mistakes at Craven Cottage, Trybal News reports.
Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea took advantage of Fulham’s defensive errors to claim victory in the London derby. Joao Pedro opened the scoring after only 31 seconds when he raced onto Cole Palmer’s pass and lifted the ball over Bernd Leno.
Fulham responded well and levelled in the 23rd minute. Josh King finished the move to give the home side hope.
Chelsea, however, regained the lead just before half-time. Morgan Rogers scored on his debut after Maxence Lacroix created the opening with good work down the right.
The visitors extended their advantage four minutes after the restart. Palmer found the net to make it 3-1 and put Chelsea in control.
Fulham refused to give up. Gonzalo Garcia pulled one back soon after with his first Fulham goal, scoring from inside the penalty area on his debut.
The Cottagers then pushed for an equaliser. Antonee Robinson came close when he attempted to lob Robert Sanchez, but his effort went just wide.
The defeat means Fulham have now lost their opening Premier League game in four of the last seven seasons. They have won one and drawn two of the other three.
Arbeloa accepted that his side gave Chelsea too many opportunities but praised the character his young squad showed after falling behind.
“We concede goals in the first minute, the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half and there are no worse moments to concede,” Arbeloa conceded.
“But we showed character and personality, and I am very proud of how my players responded.
“We deserved a little bit more, but football is not about what you deserve, it is about what you take.
“If you lose against a team like Chelsea, they [should] have to do a little bit more.
“For me, they are easy goals for them and mistakes we cannot make. We need to improve and be more ready in the first minute, that is for sure.
“We are on our way and we will keep improving. The first thing I want to see is a competitive team.
“We were tonight, we tried our best and tried to play our football against a team like Chelsea, which is not easy.”
Young Fulham players provide reasons for optimism
Despite the defeat, Arbeloa can take encouragement from the performances of several young players.
Gonzalo Garcia, Josh King, Oscar Bobb and Cesar Palacios all started against Chelsea. Their involvement underlined Arbeloa’s willingness to trust young talent as he begins his tenure at Fulham.
Garcia joined Fulham from Real Madrid this summer and marked his Premier League debut with a goal. He became the first Fulham player to score on his Premier League debut since Chris David against Crystal Palace in May 2014.
King also made history with his goal. The teenager became only the third Fulham player to score multiple Premier League goals before turning 20, joining Collins John and Ryan Sessegnon.
He also became the first teenager to score on the opening matchday for any Premier League club since Brighton’s Evan Ferguson did so during the 2023-24 season.
Arbeloa believes the young players can play a major role in Fulham’s development.
“I believe in them and I believe in young players. I think they have the energy and ambition I want, and they fit in the way I play. Josh King is absolutely amazing,” Arbeloa added.
“What a player you have here, and I am really happy with him. Gonzalo [Garcia] scored and Cesar [Palacios] did well.
“I think they need a bit more time, but they are doing great and making an impact already.”
Fulham now have to address the defensive lapses that cost them against Chelsea. Arbeloa’s side showed attacking quality and resilience, but they must improve their concentration at key moments.
The result leaves the new Fulham manager with plenty to work on. However, the performances of his young players offer a positive foundation as the season continues.
