The Nigerian star crossed the finish line in 48.47 seconds to claim his maiden Commonwealth title, finishing ahead of England’s Jake Minshull, who took silver in 48.99 seconds, while Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson earned bronze with a time of 49.22 seconds.

Nathaniel entered the final carrying the fastest qualifying time and justified his status as the favourite with a controlled race from start to finish. Displaying his trademark rhythm and strength over the barriers, the 23-year-old gradually separated himself from the field before comfortably sealing victory over the final metres.

The gold medal represents another significant milestone in the career of one of Africa’s fastest-rising track athletes. Since emerging on the international scene, Nathaniel has consistently elevated his performances, breaking Nigeria’s long-standing national record, capturing the NCAA title in the United States, reaching the World Athletics Championships final and establishing himself among the world’s elite 400m hurdlers with a personal best of 47.11 seconds.

His latest success also completes an impressive personal turnaround at the Commonwealth Games. After falling short of the podium at the previous edition, Nathaniel returned to Glasgow a far more experienced and accomplished athlete, converting years of steady progress into the biggest title of his Commonwealth career.

The victory adds another gold medal to Team Nigeria’s growing collection in Glasgow, where the country’s athletes have continued to deliver standout performances across multiple sports. It also reflects the positive impact of recent investments in elite athlete development by the National Sports Commission, with improved preparation and support translating into strong results on the international stage.

Nathaniel’s triumph further enhances Nigeria’s reputation in the one-lap hurdles and provides another memorable highlight in what has become one of the nation’s most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns. With the World Championships and future global competitions on the horizon, the Nigerian hurdler has once again demonstrated that he belongs among the very best in the event.
