Kano Pillars have reached an agreement in principle with Super Eagles assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede to become the club’s new Technical Adviser ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League season, Trybal News can exclusively reveal.
The development follows reports that the former Remo Stars coach was spotted in Kano on Thursday, sparking speculation over a possible move to the four time NPFL champions. Those reports have now been confirmed, with the club set to hand Ogunmodede the responsibility of leading their rebuilding project.
Confirming the agreement, Kano Pillars Media Director Isma’eel Abba Tangalashi announced the news on X.
“We’ve reached an agreement to appoint Daniel Ogunmodede (Ijaball) as our new Technical Adviser ahead of the 2026/2027 football season. Welcome to Kano and the Sai Masu Gida family are happy to have you with us!”
Ogunmodede is expected to replace Baba Ganaru took charge of the club after Evans Ogenyi was suspended by the club in October 2025 alongside Chief Coach Ahmed Garba following Kano Pillars’ disappointing performances during the 2025/2026 NPFL campaign.
In a statement released at the time, the club said the suspensions took immediate effect as part of efforts to reposition the team and improve results.
The club appointed former captain and assistant coach Gambo Muhammad to oversee technical duties on an interim basis alongside goalkeeping coach Suleiman Shuaibu. Junior Pillars coach Garzali Muhammad also joined the interim coaching setup while the club searched for a permanent replacement.
Kano Pillars thanked their supporters for their continued loyalty during the difficult period and assured fans that steps were being taken to restore the club’s winning culture.
Ogunmodede arrives with an impressive reputation after guiding Remo Stars to a historic Nigeria Premier Football League title on 27 April 2025. The triumph was the club’s first league championship and made Remo Stars the first South West club to win the NPFL title since Julius Berger achieved the feat in 2000.
He remained in charge during the early part of the 2025/2026 campaign before Remo Stars suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League. Shortly after that match, Ogunmodede was no longer seen on the touchline for club games following reports of disagreements with the club’s board.
Despite his absence from the team since mid October 2025, Remo Stars never officially announced his departure.
The club had already appointed Usman Abd’Allah in February, but the managerial change failed to reverse their fortunes. A difficult campaign ended with Remo Stars suffering relegation from the NPFL on the final day of the season.
Kano Pillars will now hope Ogunmodede can inspire a return to the top of Nigerian football. Sai Masu Gida remain one of the country’s most successful clubs, having won the NPFL title four times in the 2007/08, 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons.
The experienced coach is expected to be officially unveiled in the coming days as Kano Pillars begin preparations for the 2026/2027 campaign with renewed ambition of challenging for domestic honours once again.
