South Africa head coach Hugo Broos criticised Czechia’s approach after his side fought back to earn a 1-1 draw in their FIFA World Cup Group A clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday.
The result kept both teams firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages, with everything still to play for heading into the final round of group matches.
South Africa rescued a valuable point late in the game when Teboho Mokoena calmly converted a penalty. However, Broos felt his side deserved more from the contest and argued that Czechia’s direct style made the match difficult to watch.
Speaking after the game, the Belgian coach claimed Czechia relied heavily on physicality and long balls rather than building attacks through possession.
“Czechia is a physical team and they don’t like to play football or a passing game,” Broos said in his news conference.
“It’s very straight, and they have the players for it. All the players are tall. So that means that for us it was very difficult with those high balls.
“And this is what Czechia did, and OK, it’s a tactic. I can’t say why this or why that. This is the coach who decides that, and maybe if I should be the coach of Czechia, I should do the same thing.
“But I think if you like football that you like more the game we played today than the game of Czechia.”
Despite his frustration, Broos acknowledged that Czechia’s tactics were a deliberate choice from their coaching staff and effective enough to earn a point from the match.
Czechia manager Miroslav Koubek refused to engage in a debate when asked about Broos remarks. Instead, he calmly dismissed the criticism and defended his team’s approach.
“That’s his opinion,” Koubek said. “He can have that opinion but my opinion is different.”
Hugo Broos also voiced his disappointment with the venue in Atlanta, despite praising the overall quality of the stadium. The South Africa coach believes traditional football atmospheres are difficult to recreate in indoor arenas.
“If I can be very honest, this is not a football stadium,” he said.
“It’s a nice stadium, fantastic stadium. Everything you want, but only the grass is football. All the rest is not.
“It’s a covered stadium, so yeah, I like to play in an open stadium. I don’t feel really the atmosphere in such a stadium. When you compare it with Azteca, for example, that’s a football stadium.”
WhileHugo Broos questioned both Czechia’s playing style and the venue, South Africa’s late equaliser ensured they remained in the race for qualification. With one group match remaining, both nations still have the opportunity to secure a place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
