Tolu Arokodare club side Wolverhampton Wanderers have been officially relegated from the Premier League after a disappointing 2025 26 campaign, with results over the weekend and Monday confirming their drop to the Championship with five matches still to play.
Their fate was effectively sealed following a heavy 3-0 defeat to Leeds United, a result that left them on the brink. There was a brief glimmer of hope when Tottenham Hotspur conceded a late equaliser against Brighton and Hove Albion, delaying the inevitable.
However, that hope was extinguished when West Ham United picked up a crucial point away to Crystal Palace, confirming Wolves’ relegation mathematically.
The drop ends an eight year stay in the top flight for Wolves, a period that once promised so much under Nuno Espirito Santo. During that era, the club not only secured promotion but also achieved back to back seventh place finishes, reached the Europa League quarter finals and made an FA Cup semi final appearance. Those highs now feel distant after several seasons of decline marked by poor recruitment decisions and instability within the club’s leadership.
Managerial changes have also contributed to the slide, with both Gary O’Neil and Vitor Pereira dismissed in recent campaigns. Chairman Jeff Shi stepped down in December following a troubled summer and a disastrous start to the season, leaving the club in further uncertainty.
Rob Edwards took charge in November but was unable to spark a turnaround, with results continuing to go against the team. By the January transfer window, attention had already begun to shift toward preparing for life in the Championship.
One of the club’s major signings, Tolu Arokodare, arrived from Genk on deadline day in September for a fee reported to be between £23.4 million and £24 million. The Nigerian striker signed a four year deal with an option for an additional year, brought in to strengthen the attack during a difficult season.
However, it has been a challenging debut campaign for Arokodare, who has made 28 league appearances, starting 12 matches, and recording three goals and one assist across 1,279 minutes of action. His struggles mirrored those of the team, as Wolves failed to find consistency or momentum throughout the season.
With relegation now confirmed, the focus for Wolves will shift to rebuilding and regrouping ahead of next season, as they aim to return to the Premier League after a campaign that never truly took off.
